Softball Crushes Five Home Runs in Midweek Sweep at Rhode Island
3/25/2026 8:29:00 PM | Softball
KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown softball's (8-13) offense came alive as the Bears earned a midweek doubleheader sweep at Rhode Island on Wednesday (March 25) at the URI Softball Complex. Brown took the first game 5-1, before winning game two 16-5 in five innings.
The 16 runs in game two are the most runs in a game by Brown since scoring 16 against Holy Cross on March 22, 2022. Brown crushed five home runs against the Rams in the second game, the highest total by the Bears since at least 2012.
GAME 1: Brown 5, Rhode Island 1
Brown slugged out seven hits in the first game and Macy Borowski (5-5) stranded 12 Rhode Island runners as Brown began the day with a 5-1 win over URI.
Abby Bettencourt and Jasmine Hsiao each finished with two hits and the bottom four batters in the lineup drove in all five runs for the Bears, led by two RBI from Lilly Burns.
Borowski threw the complete game, scattering seven hits and six walks to only allow one run. The junior struck out seven Rams and got out of bases-loaded jams in three different innings.
After getting out of the first jam in the bottom of the third, Brown responded in the fourth. Bettencourt doubled to right and scored on a single by Borowski. Cameron Zytkewicz Ray then tripled to center field to score Borowski and make it 2-0.
A two-out RBI single by the Rams in the bottom of the fifth cut Brown's lead in half.
In the top of the sixth, Bettencourt singled to lead off the inning but two strikeouts quickly put the Bears in a hole. After Zytkewicz Ray walked on a full count, Burns, also on a full count, doubled to the wall in right. Center to score both runners. Hsiao then doubled to left center to score Burns to make the score 5-1.
Borowski responded with a three-up, three-down inning in the sixth but found some trouble in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate, but Borowski struck out the next batter swinging to end the game.
GAME 2: Brown 16, Rhode Island 5 (5 innings)
Brown's offense picked up season highs in runs (16), hits (12) and home runs (5) as the Bears crushed Rhode Island to close out the day.
Seven different Bears finished with a hit, including three-hit games by both Zytkewicz Ray and Alyssa Villarde. Five different Bears hit a home run in the win over the Rams.
Things started fast for Brown as Maya Choksi led off the game taking the third pitch she saw over the right center field fence for her first-career home run. Two batters later, Maggie Foxx hit a moonshot to over the left field fence to double the Bears' lead.
With one out in the second, Villarde singled and that was followed by a two-run home run by Hsiao, making it 4-0. Choksi walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Foxx.
The Bears continued the onslaught in the third, loading the bases on a hit batter, a single and a walk. Reagan Crosthwaite then singled to right to bring home the sixth run of the game. After a flyout, a productive out by Hsiao on a grounder to third make it 7-0.
Brown's eighth run came in the fourth as Zytkewicz Ray singled home Torii Ramirez, who had entered the game to run for Elli Thompson, who led off the inning with a walk.
Edie Cobb, who had made it through the first three innings unscathed, stranding six Rhode Island runners, was finally got to in the fourth. URI would score three runs off Cobb before the sophomore was replaced by Annie Finch. The Rams added two more to make it 8-5 before a groundout ended the inning.
If there was any shot at a comeback for the Rams, Brown put an end to that thought in the fifth. A single by Villarde started the inning and two one-out walks loaded the bases. After a pop out in the infield, Bettencourt singled home two runs.
Zytkewicz Ray then took the first pitch she saw and clanged it off the scoreboard in left center field for a three-run home run, pushing the score to 13-5. After an error and a walk, Villarde returned to the plate and went opposite way for a three-run home run to make it 16-5.
With daylight dwindling, Finch worked around a one-out double to close out the victory for the Bears.
