PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (6-12, 1-1 Ivy) split a doubleheader with Columbia (9-13, 1-1 Ivy) to start Ivy League play on Saturday (March 21) at Brown Softball Field.
The Bears dropped game one 1-0 but turned around to win game two 4-3. Abby Bettencourt had the biggest hit for the Bears on the day with a three-run home run in game two.
GAME 1: Columbia 1, Brown 0
Macy Borowski shined for Brown in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out nine but could not get the offensive support as the Bears were shutout in a 1-0 loss to Columbia.
Brown managed just three hits and two walks, while striking out eight batters against Columbia starter Mads Lawson. Amanda Deng, Bettencourt and Lilly Burns were three Bears to collect a hit.
Columbia scored the game's lone run in the top of the third after a lead-off triple and a sacrifice fly in the following at bat. From that point on, Borowski allowed just three more base runners to reach base, keeping the Bears in the game.
The Bears' best chance came in the sixth with Amanda Deng doubling down the line in right and moving to third on a ground ball. A groundout in the next at bat stranded Deng.
Bettencourt drew a two-out walk in the seventh but a strikeout ended the game.
GAME 2: Brown 4, Columbia 3
Brown scored early and held on for a 4-3 win to split the doubleheader with Columbia to close out the day.
Bettencourt had a three-run home run and Jasmine Hsiao hit a solo home run and that would be enough for the duo of Edie Cobb and Borowski in the circle.
Cobb earned the win, going five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. The sophomore issued 10 walks but stranded nine runners on base, including getting out of two bases-loaded jams in both the first and second innings with allowing just two runs.
After a first inning run by the Lions, Brown responded with Amanda Deng singled to start the bottom of the first. Elli Thompson looked to sacrifice bunt Deng to second and the throw to first was off target allowing Thompson to get to the second and Deng to third. After two groundouts, Bettencourt drove the second pitch she saw to right center field. The ball hit off the top of the fence and over the wall for the sophomore's first home run of the season.
Up one to start the bottom of the second, Hsiao took a 3-2 pitch into the Brown bullpen in left field to make the score 4-2.
Columbia pulled within one with a two-out single to make it 4-3 in the top of the fourth.
After Brown left two on in the bottom of the fifth, Borowski entered the game to try to keep the one run lead. The sixth started with a walk and a single on a bunt and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Borowski then got the next two batters to pop up to second base to end the inning.
The junior then closed out the seventh inning getting a flyout and two strikeouts to earn the save and split the doubleheader.
