Men's Hockey Drops Friday Night Game at Union
1/16/2026 10:07:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union Garnet Chargers (14-6-2, 5-5-1 ECAC) tallied two goals in the second period and added two empty net goals in the final minutes to take a 4-0 home win over the Brown Bears (4-14-0, 3-8-0 ECAC) Friday night at M&T Bank Center.
"It's hard; we've been in almost every game, but we cannot get over the hump," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said . "On the road against a really good team, you have to capitalize on chances, and we had chances. Union's goalie played very well, he didn't give up many second opportunities, and we didn't score on a 5-on-3. You need to be able to take advantage of those situations, and we just haven't this year. Our power play is really struggling.
"When we had chances, we just didn't execute. The season isn't over. I think we have some pretty good hockey players, but we need to play as a team. We're only going to be successful if we have everybody play together and play with a little bit of positive juice. It's very easy to get frustrated."
The Bears had a great chance in the opening minutes as Matthew Brille broke behind the Union defense for a breakaway, but Brille's shot was turned aside by Union goaltender Brayden Gillespie (25 saves).
Tyler Shea (37 saves) was strong in the opening frame and robbed Riley Brueck of a goal on a Union 2-on-1 late in the period. Both teams came up empty on one power play chance in the frame.
Union broke the deadlock 2:24 into the second period as Troy Pelton tallied his first career goal with assists going to Luke Buss and Drew Sutton.
Brian Nicholas was robbed of a goal during a Brown power play six minutes into the middle period.
Six minutes later, Union's Parker Lindauer doubled the Garnet Charger lead on the power play with his fifth goal of the season.
Nate Hanley and Sutton added a pair of empty net goals in the final minutes of regulation to push the final score to 4-0.
