Pereyra’s First Collegiate Goal Lifts Bears to 1-0 Win Over Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Brown men's soccer team (3-2-0) defeated the Rhode Island Rams (1-4-2) 1-0 with a late goal from Mateo Pereyra on Tuesday night.
"I thought it was a good result and great performance from the guys today," Assistant Coach Steven Tekesky said. "I thought the first half was really good from the group. We were able to limit URI's chances, stopping them in transition, while creating a lot of our own. In the second half we also did well, and were able to find a late goal from Mateo Pereyra," said Tekesky.
The Bears had a strong start to the match, outshooting the Rams 4-0 in the first half. Jamin Gogo Peters, Diego Elizalde, and Mads Stistrup Petersen all recorded shots throughout the first 45. With seven seconds left before the break, Stistrup Petersen fired the ball from the left side of the box in an attempt to get the Bears on the board. Rhode Island's goalkeeper Caleb McNeil made the stop to keep it a scoreless draw heading into half.
With both teams unable to net a goal in the first half, the battle continued into the second. Brown's goal came in the 80th minute when first-year Mateo Pereyra netted his first collegiate goal. Elizalde danced around the Rams' Kyler Vojvodic, before handing the ball off to Stistrup Petersen. Stistrup Petersen sent a pass up the field to Pereyra, who then found the back of the net to give the Bears a 1-0 edge over the Rams.
Rhode Island tried to capitalize on opportunities late in the second half, but were unsuccessful. The Rams' Vojvodic found himself on a breakaway opportunity late in the second half, but was cut off with a clutch tackle by Mathias Hille.
Goalkeeper Max Pfaffman made his first appearance this season, clocking all 90 minutes of playing time and making two saves to keep Rhode Island off the board.
