Men’s Soccer Presents Year-End Team Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown men's soccer team presented its year-end awards on Wednesday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. University letter sweaters were also given to the freshmen and senior classes.

Britton Chichester Award - Mateo Pereyra
This award is presented to the first-year player who best exemplifies sportsmanship through dedication; perseverance; fair play, leadership, spirit, and support of his teammates and coaches, as selected by his teammates. The award was instituted in 2001 in honor of Britton Chichester, who died in an automobile accident in 1989 during his senior year of high school. Britton is the son of David Chichester, class of 1967 and long-time Chairman of the Friends of Brown Soccer and former co-captain and goalkeeper.Brit was a three-sport athlete at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Md., who loved life and especially loved sports.
Class of 1937 Trophy Award - Mathias Hille
This award is awarded to the player who contributed the most overall to the team.
Hille started in all 15 matches for the Bears this season, totaling 1,344 minutes of playing time on the year. The Frankfurt, Germany native, and transfer from Northeastern earned his first point as a Bear in Brown's season-opening win against Holy Cross. Hille was named Second Team and Academic All-Ivy at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
Heinz Kubel Award - Mateo Pereyra
The next award goes to the best offensive player from the Fall 2025 season.
Pereyra had a memorable first season as a Bear, leading the team in scoring with four goals this season. He appeared in 14 of Brown's 15 matches in 2025, starting in 11 of them. Pereyra scored the game-winning goal in the Bears' 1-0 win against in-state rival Rhode Island.
Captain John Sherman Class of 1962 Award - Langdon Gryglas
This next award is in memory of John Sherman, class of 1962. As Captain of the 1961 Brown men's soccer team, and as a fighter pilot and captain in the United States Marine Corps, John Sherman emphasized the qualities of leadership, scholarship, and dedication. Captain Sherman displayed an unrivaled respect for his team, his college, and his country, and fought and died bravely in Vietnam representing the country he loved.
Thomas Gertken Award - Mathias Hille
The Thomas Gertken Award is an annual award presented to the top defensive player from the 2025 fall season. Thomas Gertken, class of 1979, won one Ivy League Title, made three NCAA Tournament appearances, and reached the NCAA Semifinals in 1977.
Cliff Stevenson Award - Mathias Hille
The Cliff Stevenson Award is an annual award to the most valuable player on the Brown men's soccer team. Cliff Stevenson came to Brown in 1960 as the University's first full-time men's soccer coach. Stevenson, who retired as the Brown men's soccer coach in 1990, finished with a career record of 251-160-36 and 15 Ivy League titles in 31 years at Brown.
William Margeson Coaches' Award - James Snaith
This next award is presented to the player on the team who through sportsmanship and character, made a unique contribution to the team. William Margeson, class of 1937 was the super star of Brown soccer. In his senior season, Margeson was the driving force as Brown went through an undefeated season (6-0-2) and captured the New England Soccer League Title. His 12 goals were top of the league.
Snaith appeared in all 15 matches for the Bears, starting in 14. He totaled 1,265 minutes in the 2025 season. Snaith remained aggressive on the pitch, helping create scoring opportunities for Brown while minimizing their opponents'. Snaith was named First Team All-Ivy at the end of the year, and is the first player to earn First Team honors since midfielder Kojo Dadzie in 2023.
Jeff Lombardo Courage Award - Carter Smith
This award is presented to a player who demonstrates exceptional resilience, perseverance, and strength of character. Named for Jeff Lombardo '84 - team captain, four-year standout, and a model of courage - the award reflects his enduring spirit. After being diagnosed with ALS in 2015, Jeff defied the odds for a decade, inspiring others through his humor, optimism, and love of life. His legacy celebrates those who overcome injuries, challenges, or hardships to succeed on the field and in the classroom, showing unwavering commitment to team, growth, and gratitude in the face of adversity.
