PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (30-15, 13-8 Ivy) clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a walk-off win over Princeton (26-16, 17-4 Ivy) on Saturday (May 3). The Bears and Tigers split the doubleheader with Princeton winning game two.
Brown will be the four seed in the Ivy League Tournament which will be held at Princeton from May 8-10. Brown's win against Princeton gave the Bears their first 30-win season since 1992.
GAME 1: Brown 4, Princeton 3
Cameron Zytkewicz Ray delivered the walk-off single as Brown scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for the first time in program history.
Down by one, entering the seventh, Brown started the inning with a triple by Amanda Deng down the right field line. After a pop up, Elli Thompson and Laurel Moody both drew walks to load the bases. Alexis Guevara hit a grounder to first base and the throw home got the runner for the second out of the inning.
During the next at bat, a wild pitch allowed Lily Berlinger to cross the plate and tie the game. With a full count, Zytkewicz Ray sent a ball down the right field line that fell in front of the right fielder to bring home Maya Choksi, who had entered the game to run, to score the game winning run.
Brown started the day off quickly with Jasmine Hsiao walking and two batters later, Moody homered to left field to put the Bears up 2-0.
Princeton picked up a run in the third before taking the lead with two runs in the fourth.
Brown had multiple chances throughout the game as the Bears had the leadoff batter reach in the second, third and sixth innings, twice with doubles, but could not get the runner home.
Guevara (16-7) picked up the win throwing a complete game, allowing the three runs on nine hits while striking out four batters.
Moody, who drew one of Brown's five walks in the win, set the program record for walks in a season.
GAME 2: Princeton 7, Brown 5
Hsiao finished with two of Brown's six hits but the Bears dropped their regular season finale by two runs to the Tigers.
Brown jumped on Princeton's starter with a double from Hsiao, a walk by Kaicee Klus and a single by Moody to score the first run. After a walk loaded the bases, Deng drew a walk to score the second run of the inning. Abby Bettencourt singled to left to make the score 3-0.
Princeton scored one in the second but the Bears responded with a two-out two-run double to left by Deng to go ahead 5-1.
