PRINCETON, N.J. – Brown softball (33-15) won the Ivy League Tournament Championship with a 4-1 win over Princeton (28-18) at C.L. Paul Field in Princeton on Saturday (May 10).
With the win, Brown clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997.
Alexis Guevara, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, earned her third win of the weekend, throwing a complete game, scattering five hits with one run and striking out three batters. Guevara earned her 20th win of the season, becoming just the second 20-game winner in program history.
Brown finished the game with seven hits, two each from Kaicee Klus, Laurel Moody and Elli Thompson. Cameron Zytkewicz Ray drew two walks for the Bears.
The Bears got on the board fast, with Jasmine Hsiao reaching on an error and moving to second on a groundout by Klus. Moody then stepped to the plate and drove a ball to right to score Hsiao for the first run of the game.
Princeton tied the game on a two-out double in the third but a foul out ended any threat.
In the bottom of the fourth, Zytkewicz Ray led off with a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. An infield single by Bettencourt moved Zytkewicz Ray to third. After a ground out, Thompson put the Bears back on top with a single up the middle and Brown took a 2-1 lead into the fifth.
One inning later, Klus started the fifth beating out an infield single and moved to third on a double down the line by Moody. Guevara helped herself out hitting it back to the pitcher, who threw home but not in time to get Klus at the plate, forcing a pitching change for the Tigers.
After another walk by Zytkewicz Ray loaded the bases, Bettencourt delivered with a sacrifice fly to put the Bears up 4-1.
The was all Guevara would need as the senior would work around a two-out double in the sixth and sit down the Tigers in order in the seventh with the final out a pop out to Zytkewicz Ray.
Along with Guevara, Bettencourt, Alyssa Villarde and Moody were all named to the Ivy League All-Tournament Team.
