PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (28-13, 12-6 Ivy) earned a series sweep over Yale (19-27, 7-14 Ivy) with a 5-1 win over the Bulldogs on Monday (April 28).
The Bears again used early offense and Alexis Guevara (15-6) went the distance in the victory.
Abby Bettencourt and Leah Carey led Brown with two hits each as the Bears finished with just six hits but Brown also drew six walks and took advantage of three Yale errors. Both laurel Moody and Guevara each earned two free passes.
Jasmine Hsiao started the game with a walk and after two outs, Guevara kept the inning going with a single to short on a pop up that was lost in the sun. An error on a grounder by Cameron Zytkewicz Ray loaded the bases. Bettencourt then singled up the middle to score two. Amanda Deng hit a fly ball to right field that was off the right fielder's glove to bring to more runs home and give Brown a 4-0 lead after one.
A single by Bettencourt started the third inning and a sac bunt moved Bettencourt to third. Carey then singled to left to score Bettencourt.
Guevara was in control, not allowing her first hit of the game until two outs in the fourth inning. Yale didn't break through until the sixth inning when the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out and a fielder's choice brought in a run. Guevara got out of the inning with a pop up in the next at bat.
In the seventh, Yale got two runners on but a nine-pitch at bat ended in a strikeout to close out the game.
With the win, Brown is now tied for second in the Ivy League with a 12-6 record with one series left on the schedule.
Guevara's three strikeouts tied the Brown program record for most strikeouts in a season by a pitching staff with 221.
