Cobb Delivers Complete Game, Hsiao Homers in Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Behind a complete game from Edie Cobb, Brown softball (29-13) earned a 2-1 win at Providence (22-26) on Wednesday night to close out non-conference play.
Jasmine Hsiao hit her fifth home run of the season for the game winning run and Lilly Burns also drove in a run. Brown finished the game with six hits from six different players.
Cobb, making her third start of the season, picked up her third win of the year with.a season-high seven innings pitched and three strikeouts. Cobb scattered three hits and worked around five walks as Brown broke a 10-game losing streak to Providence and won at Providence for the first time since 2000.
With her first strikeout of the game, Cobb helped the Brown pitching staff set the single season strikeout record with the 222nd strikeout of the season.
Brown's 29th victory of the season is the fourth-most in program history and with the win over Providence, Brown went 4-0 against Ocean State opponents.
Providence struck first, taking advantage of two walks to start the inning, scoring the first run of the game on a groundout. The Friars had a runner on third with just one out but Cobb shut the door and got out of the inning with a groundout to short.
Abby Bettencourt's one-out double in the top of the second started things for Brown. After a flyout, Burns singled to right to score Bettencourt and tie up the game.
With one out in the third, Hsiao crushed the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a solo home run, putting the Bears up 2-1.
The one run lead was all Cobb would need as the first year allowed baserunners in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings but gout out of the inning each time.
In the bottom of the seventh, Providence put a runner in scoring position with a one-out double. In the next at bat, a ground ball to short saw the throw go to third and the Friars' runner was eventually chased down by Cameron Zytkewicz Ray in a run down. The game ended as Cobb induced her 13th ground ball out with a comebacker.
