REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Brown men's crew finished the second day of competition at the Redwood Shores Challenge, facing off against the top ranked California Golden Bears in several regattas. It was a morning of fierce competition between two of the top three teams in the country, with both programs looking to make a statement as the weekend comes to an end.
"It's been an exciting and demanding weekend of racing," said Men's Crew Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89. "Our crews raced very hard this morning in perfect conditions and we saw clearly what we do well and where we can improve. I was really impressed by how our athletes were fully engaged, made adjustments and performed. The effort and the will to compete was there in every race, all the way down the course. We have a terrific group."
The varsity crew found themselves in the closest race of the day, losing by only 2.7 seconds after posting a final time of 05:34.5. With close races against Washington and California, the top two teams in the country, the Bears have established themselves as a true national contender.
The second varsity, stroked by Isaac Hillicks-Tulip and coxed by Lizzie Mitchell, dropped their race by 3.2 seconds after finishing with a time of 05:41.4. The 2V8 had a successful weekend in California, winning two of the three races that they competed in.
The third varsity also had a close finish today, dropping their contest by 4.1 seconds after posting a final time of 05:47.6.
"I'm grateful that we had the chance to race Cal," said Cooke. "They have a great tradition, a strong program, and fast crews."
The Bears will head back to Providence to prepare for their first and only home regatta of the season on Apr. 19 against 11th ranked Northeastern.
