Men's Crew Begins Spring Season with Day 1 of Sarasota 2K
3/27/2026 8:21:00 PM | Men's Crew
SARASOTA, Fla. - Brown Men's Crew hit the water for the first time this spring, racing this afternoon on day one of the Sarasota 2K at Nathan Benderson Park. Each of the four Bruno crews that competed today utilized a similar strategy, with an emphasis on measured starts at the beginning of each race that led to significant increases in speed and power beyond the halfway mark. Â
"The team raced well today and all the crews rowed hard against Yale and Northeastern," Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 said. "The Varsity came back from a deficit, had a courageous sprint, but fell in a heartbreaking split-second loss. The Second Varsity had a big win over Yale and Northeastern."
"The Third Varsity found a way to get in front of Yale and the Fourth Varsity inspired everyone by placing ahead of Harvard by less than a second. So everyone faced a real test and fought hard. It's a great venue and a terrific opportunity. Now we have the chance to make adjustments and come back better tomorrow."
The Varsity Eight faced Northeastern and Yale, looking to defend the Albert Cup against the Bulldogs after winning the rivalry race last season for the first time since 2013. Coxed by Elenna Seguin and stroked by Tom Griffin, the Bears crossed the finish line in 5:42.06, dropping the Cup to Yale and moving to 6-11 all-time in the series.Â
Bruno's top crew paced themselves early, eventually putting on a burst at the 1,500 meter mark, gaining about a seat on Yale. In the closest finish of the day, the Bears came in third place by only 0:00.02 seconds to the second place Huskies and 0:00.71 seconds behind first place Yale. Â
The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Eddie Andrews, won their race by crossing the finish line in 5:48.40. The 2V started steady and, similar to the V8, picked up their pace significantly around the 1,500 meter mark. The back half of the race was where the Bears established their lead and never relinquished, building down the course with strong technique, staying long and tall.Â
The Third Varsity, coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdett, earned a second place finish after crossing the finish line in 6:01.91. The Bears picked up the intensity around the 1,000 meter mark and were able to finish 0:02.59 seconds ahead of third place Yale.
The Fourth Varsity, coxed by Adelaide Poulson and stroked by Leyton Tucci, pushed for a last second surge that earned them a third place finish over Ivy League foe Harvard. Posting a final time of 6:08.78, the Bears competed hard against the Washington Huskies as several newcomers, such as Tucci, Henry Elbert, Ethan Carey, and Symeon Efstathiou made their regular season debuts.Â
The Bears will begin racing tomorrow morning with the 4V8 starting at 10:30 a.m., 3V8 at 10:50 a.m., 2V8 at 11:30 a.m., and the V8 capping things off at 12:10 p.m.
