SARASOTA, Fla. - The Brown men's crew program's spring-opening meet in the Sunshine State concluded with the Varsity Eight earning a bronze medal at the Sarasota 2K on Saturday.
In total, the Bears finished in third place for the Benderson Cup behind the Washington Huskies and Harvard Crimson. All four lineups remained the same as yesterday, with Brown looking to build some continuity between crews in the early stages of the season.Â
"It was a good day of racing. The Varsity bounced back from a close loss yesterday. All the crews rowed hard and kept their composure,"Â Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 said.
"We raced against five of the top crews in the country. Now we have a good understanding of the standard and what it takes to win. We have a lot of work to do but finishing third as a team for the Benderson Cup is an accomplishment."Â
Brown's top crew, coxed by Elenna Seguin and stroked by Tom Griffin, began the race at a slower pace than their competition through the first 500 meters. Much like yesterday, the 1,500 meter mark was when Bruno kicked things into gear and made a big push, vaulting themselves into third place. That late push would prove to be enough to edge out the Stanford Cardinal by 0:00.86 seconds and win the bronze medal with a final time of 05:52.01.
The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Eddie Andrews, looked to build off yesterday's victory by starting strong and staying near the front of the pack in the early stages of the race.Â
With both Washington and Harvard rowing ahead, the 1,000 meter mark is where Brown made a push to not only close the gap on the Huskies and Crimson, but widen the gap for third place over Northeastern, Stanford, and Yale. Brown picked up its second third place finish of the day with a time of 05:52.94.
The Third Varsity, coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdett, held a steady pace throughout the duration of the race. There was a push in the second half to try and catch Northeastern and lock in a third place finish, but the Bears would go on to finish in fourth place with a time of 06:11.71.Â
The Fourth Varsity paced themselves early, hanging with Harvard as they dealt with strong headwinds on the racecourse. Coxed by Adelaide Poulson and stroked by Leyton Tucci, the Bears earned a third place finish with a time of 06:27.79, clearing the Washington 5V by 0:01.25 seconds.
The Bears will return to the water on April 10-11 for the Princeton Invitational.
