Baseball Falls in Series-Opener at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – An eight-run first inning and a three-run seventh inning by Georgia Southern helped lead the Eagles past Brown baseball by a sore of 11-1 in seven innings on Friday evening.

Mika Petersen went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and freshman Ian Keusch came on in relief and tossed 4.0 innings of one-run ball with a pair of strikeouts.

Georgia Southern sent 12 batters to the plate and used eight hits to plate eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a triple, double and homer to start the inning. They later added a two-run double and two-run single as part of the frame. GSU tacked on another run in the third inning on a double and sacrifice fly.

The Bears picked up three of their four hits in the sixth inning. Cam LaGrassa led off the inning with a single, and Nathan Brasher reached on a fielder's choice. Miles Newsome and Petersen followed with back-to-back singles which plated Brasher to cut the deficit to 9-1.

Georgia Southern tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a hit by pitch and four walks to force the implementation of the run-rule to end the game.

The same two teams will round out their three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader starting at noon on ESPN+.
