STATESBORO, Ga. – The Brown baseball team put up a season-high in hits in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Georgia Southern, but the Eagles walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to sweep both games from the Bears.
The Eagles took game one by a score of 9-1 and then rallied from behind to take their first and only lead of game two on a walk-off error in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 win. Brown pounded out 11 hits in game two and held Georgia Southern to five hits.
Freshman Jack Edmunds went 3-for-4 in game two with a double and two RBIs. Junior Mika Petersen had five hits in nine at bats over the two games with an RBI and senior Nathan Brasher went 3-for-9 with a pair of runs over the two games. Freshman Luke Trout pitched 4.0+ innings in game two, not allowing a hit until the fifth inning and finished with two hits and two runs allowed.
GAME 1
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out infield error to plate a run. Brown answered back in the top of the third to tie the game 1-1 when Logan Meusy led off getting hit by a pitch. Brasher followed two batters later with a single that moved Meusy to third, and Miles Newsome followed with an RBI groundout.
The Eagles retook the lead in the bottom of the third with a leadoff single and an RBI double for the 2-1 advantage. The Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning coming on three home runs, including back-to-back homers on the first four pitches of the inning to push the lead to 6-1 lead.
Three more runs for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth inning after a single, two walks and a double brought the score to 9-1.
GAME 2
Brown's bats came alive in the nightcap to the tune of eight hits through the first five innings, and the Bears got leadoff hits in four of the first six innings. After a pair of singles in the second inning, Edmunds delivered a one out double to left-center field to plate Dillehay and give the Bears the early 1-0 lead. Brown manufactured another run in the third as Brasher led off with a single, stole second and third, then came in on a ground ball by Newsome for the 2-0 lead.
Brasher sparked another productive inning by leading off the fifth with a single, advanced to second on a ground ball, and scored on a single by Petersen that beat the shift through the left side to give Brown a 3-0 lead.
Georgia Southern stranded four runners – all on walks – through the first four innings before getting their first hit with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Eagles climbed back into the game with a pair of hits and two walks to start the fifth inning to pull within 3-2. Carter Barth came in from the bullpen and used a groundout and a huge line drive double play turned by Newsome and Dillehay up the middle to limit the damage.
With the game tied 3-3 in the top of the eighth, Christian Butera hustled out a triple with two outs to set the table for Edmunds, who delivered his third hit of the game with an RBI single up the middle to put Brown back on top 5-4.
The Eagles retied it in the bottom of the eighth when the relay throw on a fly out to left field got away. In the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out without the benefit of a hit and won it on a walk off error on a bunt.
Brown will return north and take the field next Saturday, March 15 with a doubleheader at Bryant. First pitch in Smithfield is set for 12 p.m.
