Men's Crew Wins Michalson Cup at Boston University
3/22/2025 6:02:00 PM | Men's Crew
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Brown men's crew team started their spring season today with a race at Boston University. The Bears put on an impressive showing throughout the day, winning all three races on the schedule and retaining the Michalson Cup yet again. Today's victory moves the Bears to 52-10 all-time against BU.
"It's just great to get back to racing," said Men's Crew Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89. "The athletes were really thrilled to get onto the race course and it showed in the performances."
The Varsity 8, stroked by David Person, started the day with a six second win over the Terriers, finishing with a time of 6:06.2.
Second Varsity, stroked by Isaac Hillicks-Tulip, followed the first win with one of their own, beating BU by 12 seconds and posting a finish time of 6:13.5. The Third Varsity boat capped off the sweep by defeating BU with a final time of 6:23.4, winning the race by five seconds. Brown's Fourth Varsity boat also competed, finishing with a time of 6:33.3.
"This is a new squad with a lot of people in new positions, playing new roles. I twas exciting to see them step up," said Cooke. "All the crews put in a really good effort. We did see ways we need to improve, just holding onto the speed and maintaining efficiency at pace. We'll look to improve this week as we prepare to race in Sarasota."
With their first race behind them, the Bears look ahead to that aforementioned regatta in Sarasota, Florida from Mar. 28-29, where the Albert and Stein Cups will be up for grabs. The race will provide the Bears with a stark contrast in environmental conditions as they move from the cold water of the Charles River to much warmer waters in Florida.
