PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team (16-8, 3-4 Ivy) fell to Princeton (18-3, 6-1 Ivy) 4-1 in the final match of the regular season.
"Princeton was the better team today," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
The Bears fell short in their doubles matches. At the second line, Chloe Qin and Anne Moody fell to Eva Elbaz and Bella Chhiv, 6-1. At the third line, Ali Maguy and Anne Yang fell to Alice Ferlito and Maren Urata, 6-1. Since the Tigers clinched the doubles point, the match with Hannah Shen and Abigail Lee against Tsehay Driscoll and Pearlie Zhang at the first line did not finish
"They came out more focused and confident in doubles and overwhelmed us with their aggressive and precise play," Schmidhauser added.
In singles, Princeton continued to dominate. On the first line, Ali Maguy battled but fell to Alice Ferlito, 6-2 and 6-3. Hannah Shen put up a fight at the second line but was edged out by Bella Chhiv, 6-2 and 6-4. Francesca Saroli earned the Bears' lone win of the afternoon at the sixth line, defeating Tsehay Driscoll, 6-4 and 7-5. At the fourth line, Anne Yang started strong, claiming the first set 6-4, but Princeton's Madeleine Jessup responded to win the second and third sets, 4-6 and 3-6, ending Yang's run. With the Tigers clinching the victory, matches for Abigail Lee at the third line against Eva Elbaz and Sari Woo at the fifth line against Pearlie Zhang remained unfinished.
"In singles, we had a better start. Francesca battled hard and showed a lot of fight and courage in her win at line six. She ran every ball down, moved her opponent mercilessly, and made her earn every point. Annie battled as hard as she could, but couldn't sustain her first set aggressive play the entire match, losing in tough three sets. Since our match was played inside on our four indoor courts, we were only able to play four singles matches while Abbey and Sari were waiting to go on. Abbey played a great first set with her signature aggressive style, but unfortunately was not able to finish her match as Princeton clinched the win on court four," Schmidhauser concluded.
