PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team (16-7, 3-3 Ivy) defeated Penn (11-11, 2-4 Ivy) 4-1 in the second-to-last home match before tomorrow's season finale.
"Great competitive effort by our team the entire dual match," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
The Bears were off to a scorching start in doubles. Chloe Qin and Francesca Saroli beat Joleen Saw and Maya Urata at the second line, 6-2. At the third line, Anne Yang and Ali Maguy secured the Bears' doubles point, defeating Liza Tkachenko and Sasha Motlagh, 6-2. Since the Bears secured the point, the match at the first line between Hannah Shen and Abigail Lee, and Esha Velaga and Lara Stojanovski did not finish.
"In doubles, we came out with lots of energy and willingness to play aggressively from the first point to the next. Ali and Annie played with so much clarity in their doubles win, playing aggressively and fearlessly, putting balls away at the net. Chloe and Fran clinched the doubles point with a lot of scrappy play and courage on big points," Schmidhauser added.
In singles play, the Bears remained solid. At the first line, Ali Maguy lost to Esha Velaga, 7-5 and 6-0. Anne Yang earned the Bears' first singles point of the match, defeating Maya Urata, 6-2 and 6-2. Hannah Shen secured her victory at the second line, outlasting Lara Stojanovski, 6-4 and 7-5. Abigail Lee remains undefeated in Ivy League contests, picking up her win against Joleen Saw in three sets. Lee won the first set, 6-0, but fell in the second, 4-6. In the third, she bounced back to claim the 6-4 victory, clinching the match for the Bears. The match at the fifth line between Sari Woo and Varsha Vedula did not finish, with Woo leading 1-6, 6-4, and 5-1. The match at the sixth line between Francesca Saroli and Liza Tkachenko also did not finish, with the match tied.
"In singles, Annie played a strategically smart match, using all four quadrants of the court in her quick win. Hannah was so tough under pressure. After going down 0-3 in the first set, Hannah put her head down and outworked her opponent to win the first set. In the second set, Hannah found herself in a similar situation of being down 1-4, but Hannah yet again increased her consistency level and outcompeted her opponent to give us a 3-1 lead. Abbey was clutch in her match. At 2-4 in the third set, she started competing with more patience and clarity, taking the third set 6-4 and giving us the team win," Schmidhauser concluded.
