PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's tennis team (6-5) earned their fourth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon against Fordham (6-3) at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears finished the match with a final score of 5-2, snapping the Rams' three-match winning streak.
"Fordham always competes very hard, and this year was no exception,"Â Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "In doubles, Addie and Lindsey were able to close out their set with some excellent return points and very solid and deliberate serving. At line two doubles Dani and Bella were facing match points, but battled fearlessly to give us the lead going into singles."
The Bears had a strong start to the match, securing the doubles point to start. Seniors Addison Ahlstrom and Lindsey Hofflander earned a quick 6-3 win over Fordham's Nevena Kolarevic and Julianne Nguyen at the first line. The Rams battled back at third doubles, posting a 6-4 win over sophomore Hannah Shen and first-year Ali Maguy. Brown secured the doubles point after a win at the second line. Sophomore Dani Ben-Abraham and and first-year Bella Hu defeated the Rams' Lorraine Bergmann and Lily Chitambar (7-6(7))Â to give the Bears the upper hand.
Brown continued to display their strength throughout singles. Fordham captured wins at the first and second lines, but the Bears swept through lines three to six. First-year Sari Woo earned her fifth singles win of the season over Chitambar in two sets, 7-5, 7-5. Shen defeated Bergmann in three sets at the third line. Maguy clinched the match for the Bears after taking down her opponent in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Hu finished out the match at sixth singles with a win over Fordham's Catalina Padilla Udaeta.
"In singles, five of the six matches were complete wars and I was really proud of our players how hard they fought and simply refused to give the opponent an inch. Hannah made a great comeback after being down a set and 3-5, completely outplaying her opponent in the third set. Her willingness to adjust her game plan in crucial moments of the match showed her ever improving competitive maturity once again. Our freshmen (Sari, Bella and Ali) did a great job of battling for every point with poise and gritty fight, even when their opponents kept coming back and refused to give up," Schmidhauser added. "Today was a great team effort for all involved. Our team is growing and maturing competitively with every match we play."
