CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's tennis team (14-7, 1-3 Ivy) fell to the Harvard Crimson (11-8, 1-3 Ivy) in its final road trip of the season, 4-1.
The Bears started strong as Abigail Lee and Hannah Shen won 6-3 at first doubles over Kate Kim and Claire Shao. The Crimson tied it when Kavya Karra and Andra Braicu beat Anne Yang and Ali Maguy at third doubles, 6-3. At second doubles, Chloe Qin and Anne Moody fought hard but lost 6-3 to Natalie Block and Natasha Rajaram, giving the Crimson the doubles point.
"We needed to come out with better energy in doubles at lines two and three," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "Abbey and Hannah played great doubles at line one, keeping their opponents in the back of the court and then finishing beautifully at net."
In singles, Hannah Shen lost to Claire Shao, 6-2, 6-2 at the second line, while at the third line, Abigail Lee won against Anna-Raphaëlle Serghi, 6-3, 6-3. At the fifth line, Sari Woo fell to Natalie Block, 6-3, 6-1, and at the sixth line, Chloe Qin lost to Andra Braicu, 6-2, 6-2. The first line match between Ali Maguy and Kavya Karra was unfinished: Karra took the first set, 6-1, with Maguy leading 5-4 in the second. The fourth line match between Anne Yang and Kate Kim also remained unfinished; Kim edged the first set, 7-6(2), while Yang led 2-1 in the second.
"In singles, Abbey problem-solved really well to get the win at line three. When her A game wasn't working, she changed her strategy and outcompeted her opponent. Ali, at line one, was relentless in her consistency and ball quality in the second set," Schmidhauser added.
"Abbey came up huge in critical moments. She elevated her game when it counted the most in the final stages of the match. When down 2-4 in the third set tiebreaker, Abbey was completely fearless in her shot making, going up 6-4 and closing out the match at 6-5 with a great serve and finishing shot pattern."
"Harvard played well today, and we couldn't match their consistency level. We will reset as we get ready for another match against Dartmouth on Sunday." Schmidhauser concluded.
