PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (12-6) earned a doubleheader sweep over Stonehill (6-13) on Wednesday as the Bears had a comeback win in game one and a six-inning walk-off win in game two.
GAME 1: Brown 5, Stonehill 4
Brown earned a comeback win to take down Stonehill in game one of the day. The Bears picked up three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the victory.
Six Bears finished the game with hits with Lily Berlinger leading the way with two hits and two RBI. Alexis Guevara (6-2) picked up another win, going six innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out six batters. Edie Cobb closed out the game for her second save of the season.
Stonehill took advantage of two Brown errors early on to take a 2-0 lead after three innings. Brown did not get on the board until the fifth as Jasmine Hsiao had a one-out double to get things started. After a lineout, Berlinger singled up the middle to bring home Hsiao. The tying run scored after Stonehill threw behind Berlinger at second and the ball ended in center field, as Berlinger came around to score.
The Skyhawks added a run in the sixth on a double but the Bears responded in the bottom of the frame. Abby Bettencourt singled to start the inning and Amanda Deng reached on an error. After steals of second and third a walk to Cameron Zytkewicz Ray loaded the bases. Hsiao walked to bring in the tying run before Vanessa Alexander singled home the go-ahead run to right field. A Berlinger sacrifice fly gave Brown a much-needed insurance run.
Cobb entered in the seventh and hit the first batter she saw before getting a groundout. A single brought the Skyhawks within one but back-to-back groundouts gave the Bears the win.
GAME 2: Brown 8, Stonehill 0 (6 innings)
The Bears had the bats going and got a shutout from Macy Borowski in the circle to close out the doubleheader with an 8-0 win over Stonehill in six innings.
Brown's offense came to play in game two as the Bears jumped on the Skyhawks early. Brown batted around in the first inning as the Bears scored five runs to start the game.
A walk by Hsiao and singles from Kaicee Klus and Laurel Moody loaded the bases. Abby Bettencourt hit a sacrifice fly for the first run and Zytkewicz Ray singled to load the bases again. Deng delivered a triple to the wall in right center field to clear the bases and make it 4-0. Deng would score on a wild pitch in the next at bat to make the score 5-0.
In the second, Klus singled and Moody walked before Bettencourt brought both runners home with a double to right center, putting Brown up 7-0.
No more runs would come across until the bottom of the seventh when Moody delivered a walk-off shot to left center. Moody's home run was her fifth of the season and the second walk-off home run of the year for the senior.
Borowski (4-3) picked up the win allowing just five hits and striking out seven.
