AMHERST, Mass. - The Brown women's tennis team (7-5) defeated UMass Amherst (5-5) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon, extending their winning streak to five.
UMass was able to jump ahead 1-0 after taking the doubles point. From that moment on, the Bears put forth an incredible display in singles action and stormed back by winning those matches 4-2.
Sophomore Hannah Shen picked up the first victory of the day for Brown by defeating the Minutewomen's Ella Faessler 7-6(3), 6-4. First-year Ali Maguy followed up her teammates' win with one of her own, taking down UMass' Thamonpan Jonglertakul 7-6(0), 6-2.Â
Dani Ben-Abraham comfortably earned a victory over Martina Pavissich by final scores of 6-1 and 6-2. The final match of the day was between first-year Bella Hu and Cosima Trinity Calinescu with the overall win on the line.Â
In a heavily contested match, Hu was able to prevail by final scores of 7-6(4) and 6-4, securing the overall victory for the Bears.Â
"Today's match forced our players to dig deep and bring their best competitive selves in tough conditions on the road," said Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "We didn't compete well in doubles and quickly went down 0-2 early. We played a singles lineup that was comprised of five underclassmen and it was great to see their willingness to be uncomfortable and figure out how to outcompete feisty and more experienced opponents."
"Dani, Hannah and Ali played aggressively with very good clarity and closed out their matches with confidence. Bella clinched the match for us at line 5, overcoming some late match nerves and an opponent who refused to give up. She fought hard and used her variety and speed to outlast her opponent."
