DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Brown women's tennis team (8-5) downed Davidson (10-4) in a close 4-3 match against the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. This marks Brown's eighth win of the season, extending their winning streak to six consecutive matches.Â
"Our players showed a lot of fight today in our first outdoor match of the spring season,"Â Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "We came out with a lot of energy in doubles. Hannah and Gabby played disciplined doubles, showing off their power tennis and precise net play. Lindsey and Addie used the early serve break to hold their serves pretty comfortably to take their match and the doubles point."
The Bears started off the match with high intensity, earning wins at first and third doubles. At the third line, senior Gabby Soliman and sophomore Hannah Shen posted a quick 6-1 finish over Davidson's Alex Rodehorst and Lilly Dwyer. At the first line, seniors Addison Ahlstrom and Lindsey Hofflander earned a 6-3 win over the Wildcats' Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges. Brown's two wins allowed them to clinch the doubles point, and enter singles with an edge over Davidson.Â
"In singles, Annie and Dani did a great job sticking to their game plan and executing when needed to put their matches away in two sets. Bella, Ali and Hannah battled hard in their three-set matches, with Bella persevering in the third set and clinching yet another close match for the Bears. Bella played with courage and willingness to figure out a way to make her opponent uncomfortable. She showed a lot of fight and determination which are qualities that will be needed from all of our players as we enter the final part of our season," Schmidhauser said.
Brown and Davidson split the singles matches earning three wins each. The Wildcats took lines one, two and three, while the Bears swept lines four, five and six. Davidson evened the playing field after earning their first win of the day in first singles. Kavya Patel defeated Ahlstrom in two sets (6-1, 6-1). Brown bounced back at the fourth line when sophomore Anne Yang took down Langford in two sets (6-2, 6-4). The Bears continued to extend their lead after sophomore Dani Ben-Abraham beat Ellie Hammond 6-3, 6-2 at the fifth line. First-year Bella Hu clinched the match for the Bears at the sixth line. She rounded out the match in three sets over Ines Roti (6-4, 2-6, 6-2). This marks the second match in a row that Hu has come in clutch for the Bears, clinching the win (previously in Brown's 4-3 win over UMass on Mar. 15).
