Men's Hockey Falls to Top-Seeded Quinnipiac in Game One
3/14/2025 10:15:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats (23-10-2, 16-5-1 ECAC) captured a 4-1 victory in game one of the ECAC Quarterfinal series over the Brown Bears (14-14-3, 9-11-2 ECAC) Friday night at M&T Bank Arena.
"We did some things well tonight, but we just need to be much more consistent," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "Obviously, Quinnipiac is a very gifted hockey team, and they have some skill. If you make a mistake, they'll make you pay and the mistakes you make are magnified because they end up in the back of the net.
"We had our chances – it wasn't a perfect game by any stretch for us. It's 1-0 and we hit a pipe on the power play in the second and we had a shorthanded bid down 2-0. We just need to play a little bit quicker; our decisions have to be quicker, and our pace has to be quicker.
"We have to play a little bit more to our identity; we're a hard-nosed, tough, physical hockey team and I thought we got away from that at times tonight. It's a new day tomorrow, it's a series for a reason. It's not over yet, we'll go back and regroup and be ready to battle tomorrow."
The Bobcats opened the scoring 5:23 into the first period as Victor Czerneckianair tallied his sixth of the season. The puck squirted out to Cooper Moore on the blue line, who wired a shot into traffic where Czerneckianair tipped it to beat Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (26 saves).
The Bears killed off the lone power play chance in the period minutes later following a slashing minor assessed to Dean Bauchiero.
Tony Andreozzi had a good scoring chance late in the period off a feed from Brendan Clark, but Quinnipiac goalie Matej Marinov (20 saves) made the save with his mask.
Quinnipiac doubled the lead 4:16 into the second as Jeremy Wilmer found the back of the net for his 14th goal of the season off a Bobcat odd-man rush.
Brown picked up its first power play of the game late in the second after Ryan St. Louis was tackled in the neutral zone, but the Bears were unable to cut into the Quinnipiac lead on the advantage.
Quinnipiac made it 3-0 with 6:50 remaining in the game as Andon Cerbone tallied his 14th goal of the season with Travis Treloar and Elliott Groenewold assisting.
Tyler Kopff got the Bears on the board with 5:32 remaining on the power play with his ninth goal of the season. Kopff cleaned up a slot rebound after his initial shot was blocked by Jack Ricketts. Ryan St. Louis and Max Scott assisted on the goal.
The Bobcats found the empty net with 2:11 remaining to push the final score to 4-1 with Chris Pelosi recording the goal.
