HAMDEN, Conn. – The top-seeded and 13th-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats (24-10-2, 16-5-1 ECAC) took a 4-0 win over the Brown Bears (14-15-3, 9-11-2 ECAC) to advance to the ECAC semifinals Saturday at M&T Bank Arena.
"It's a tough ending, but it doesn't diminish what Brown Hockey accomplished this year," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We took a huge step as a program and I couldn't be more proud of the way the guys played and battled, absolute warriors.
"We had guys playing with broken bones and through injury. They just battled and battled. It wasn't meant to be, but the future is very bright. We're going to win the ECAC Championship and we're going to be on a mission. The end of the year will fuel us. It's a really good group of guys coming back and it's a really good group of guys coming in and we're going to be a really good hockey team."
Just over a minute into the game, Tony Andreozzi was penalized for tripping to give the Bobcats its first power play of the game. Brown killed off the advantage to keep the game scoreless.
Max Scott had a good scoring chance 9:20 into the first, but his effort was turned aside by Quinnipiac goalie Matej Marinov (34 saves).
The Bears went to the penalty kill for the second time after Brendan Clark was whistled for finishing his check 9:39 into the frame. Quinnipiac challenged the play for a major but were unsuccessful.
Lawton Zacher (21 saves) made a pair of stops on the second Bobcat advantage to keep the home team off the board.
The Bears had a pair of net-front chances late in the period but were unable to sneak the puck through traffic to take the lead. Brown had a 12-5 edge in shots on goal in the opening period.
Tyler Borgula broke the deadlock 4:30 into the second period with his 11th goal of the season with assists credited to Anthony Cipollone and Ryan Smith.
Brown picked up its first power play of the game halfway through the second, but Marinov made three saves on the advantage to keep the Bears off the board.
Clark had a scoring chance with 2:40 remaining in the middle frame with Marinov making a glove save.
Ryan St. Louis had a shorthanded scoring chance in the waning seconds of the period, but Marinov once again kept the Bears off the board.
The Bears held a 25-14 shots on goal advantage through 40 minutes.
Mason Marcellus doubled Quinnipiac's lead 2:01 into the third period with Jack Ricketts and Elliott Groenewold assisting.
