PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (11-10-2, 7-8-1 ECAC) took a 5-1 home win and regular season sweep over the Yale Bulldogs (5-16-2, 4-10-2 ECAC) in a Sunday afternoon clash at Meehan Auditorium.
"We have a good hockey team, credit to Yale I thought they came out strong in the first and I didn't think we were mentally ready for the start of the game," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We got a lot better as the game went on and our power play and penalty kill were excellent, which is good to see.
"Those are two areas we definitively need to keep improving to continue to make strides up the standings. All in all, it's been a really good stretch for us the last eight games. The next six games to end the regular season are huge and for us we need to keep playing like we did in the second period; we were excellent in that period."
The Bulldogs struck first as David Chen scored a breakaway goal just 21 seconds into the game off a stretch pass from Briggs Gammill.
Lawton Zacher shut the door on the Bulldogs for the remainder of the game, stopping all 31 shots faced after the Chen goal.
Brendan Clark tied the game with 11 seconds remaining in the first period with his fifth goal of the season. The senior collected a Max Scott rebound below the goal line and beat Jack Stark (25 saves) with a wraparound goal. Ryan St. Louis added the secondary assist on the goal.
Tyler Kopff gave Brown a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second period with a power play goal for his third of the season. Kopff collected a pass from St. Louis and wired a shot past Stark. Brian Nicholas had the secondary assist on the goal.
Kopff added another power play goal 10:46 into the frame, finishing a feed from Nicholas for his second goal of the game. Scott added the secondary assist on the goal.
Alex Pineau tallied Brown's third power play goal of the frame with 6:46 remaining in the period to push Brown's lead to 4-1. Pineau found a loose puck off a point shot from St. Louis and cleaned it up for his sixth goal of the season.
Ethan Mistry tallied his first career goal with 3:48 remaining in the middle frame to extend Brown's lead to 5-1. Mistry hit Kopff with a breakout pass and jumped on the rush, collected a return pass from Kopff before roofing a shot on Stark for the goal. Pineau picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The Bears and Bulldogs skated to a scoreless third with Brown killing off three penalties in the period.
