
Softball Begins Season With Two Wins

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brown softball (2-0) won its third-straight season opener with a 13-2 win over Youngstown State and earned a comeback win over Winthrop, 6-2 in the second game of the day. It is the first 2-0 start for Brown since the 2010 season.
Laurel Moody had two home runs in the win over Winthrop and finished with five RBI on the day. Both Alexis Guevara and Macy Borowski earned wins for the Bears.
The win over Youngstown State gave head coach Mary Holt-Kelsch her first-career win as the head coach of the Bears.
"First of all, shout out to Laurel Moody for a huge day. She really shined in the big moments," said Holt-Kelsch. "The fight this team displayed was incredible and I'm so proud of them."
BROWN 13, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 2
Brown's offense came to play to start the season as the Bears scored 13 runs in the season-opening win against Youngstown State. The 13 runs are the most by Brown since scoring 15 at Yale on April 3, 2022.
The Bears finished the day with nine hits and took advantage of 11 walks in the victory. Leah Carey, Abby Bettencourt and Amanda Deng all finished with two hits. Both Carey and Kaicee Klus had three RBI to lead the lineup.
Alexis Guevara (1-0) started her senior year strong with 10 strikeouts over six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. Edie Cobb made her first collegiate appearance to close out the seventh throwing a scoreless frame with two strikeouts.
Scoreless after two innings, Brown broke through in the third. Deng singled and Carey walked before a groundout and wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs. Laurel Moody's hit to right field was misplayed by Youngstown State's right fielder allowing both Carey and Lily Berlinger to score.
Youngstown State tied the game with a home run in the bottom of the inning but it was all Brown after that.
With one out in the fourth, Carey stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and singled down the left field line to score Liv Kam and Cameron Zytkewicz Ray to make it 4-2. Moody added a sac fly to score Alyssa Villarde, making it 5-2.
A bases loaded walk for Jasmine Hsiao in the sixth added Brown's sixth run of the game.
In the seventh Brown broke things open. The inning started with a single by Bettencourt and a walk to Guevara. Jaime Ketter walked to load the bases before Deng singled to score Bettencourt and an error allowed Guevara to cross the plate. Carey's single scored Villarde to for the ninth run of the game.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Klus entered as a pinch hitter and singled home Carey and Moody. Hsiao scored on a fielding error by the right field and Klus came in to score on Bettencourt's second hit of the inning.
The seven runs Brown scored in the seventh inning are the most by the Bears in an inning since plating 10 runs in the fourth inning against Holy Cross on March 22, 2022.
BROWN 6, WINTHROP 2
Brown closed out the day with a comeback win over Winthrop, taking down the Eagles 6-2. Laurel Moody finished the game going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Jasmine Hsiao also finished the game with two hits.
Macy Borowski earned the win with a complete game showing. Borowski allowed just two unearned runs on six hits and finished with nine strikeouts.
Winthrop scored two first-inning runs on a two-out error but from there, Borowski shut down the Eagles, allowing the Bears to claw back into the game.
Moody started the top of the fourth with a walk and Kaicee Klus entered the game to run for Moody. A groundout moved Klus to second and with two outs, Amanda Deng singled home Klus to bring Brown within one.
The Bears still trailed by one in the top of the sixth when Lily Berlinger walked to start the inning. On a 2-2 count, Laurel Moody blasted her first home run of the season over the left field wall to put Brown up 3-2.
Hsiao singled in the next at bat and moved to second on a groundout. Deng hit a ground ball to short and a throwing error by the shortstop, trying to get Hsiao at third, allowed Hsiao to score Brown's third run of the inning.
Berlinger kept the seventh inning going with a two-out single up the middle and Moody continued her impressive night, taking an up-and-away pitch over the right-center field fence to make it 6-2 Bears.
Winthrop had its first two batters reach in the bottom of the seventh but Borowski settled down and got the next three batters to win the game.

Brown will play two more games in the Garnet and Gold Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 22), taking on Le Moyne at 10 a.m. and St. John's at 12:30 p.m.
