Softball Starts Season at Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball is set to begin its 2025 season with five games at the Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament over the weekend.
The Bears will take on Youngstown State (12:30 p.m.) and Winthrop (5:30 p.m.) on Friday (Feb. 21) before playing Le Moyne (10 a.m.) and St. John's (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday (Feb. 22). The weekend will close with another matchup against Youngstown State on Sunday (Feb. 23) at 12:30 p.m.
The game against Winthrop on Friday will be streamed on ESPN+.
THE FIRST PITCH
Brown is under new guidance as first-year head coach Mary Holt-Kelsch takes the reigns of the program. Holt-Kelsch comes to Brown having spent the last three seasons at Rhode Island College. In her final season at RIC, Holt-Kelsch led the Anchorwomen to a 31-win season, capped with the program's first appearance in the Little East Championship in nine seasons.
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
Brown will be facing off against Youngstown State for the first time since 2007. The Bears hold a 2-1 record all-time against the Penguins.
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Brown and Winthrop. Brown lost the previous three matchups, the last being in 2016.
Brown and Le Moyne met last season with the Bears earning an 11-3 win in five innings in the first game of Brown's season. Moe Kastens led the way for Brown with three RBI and three other Bears drove in two runs.
Brown is 2-7 all-time against St. John's but the two teams have not played since the 1992 season. Brown won both meetings in that season have losing the first seven matchups in the series.
RETURNING FIREPOWER
The Bears will return the top three hitters from a season ago. Last year, Jasmine Hsiao led Brown with a .352 average, 43 hits and 12 doubles. She was followed by Lily Berlinger (.329) and Laurel Moody (.299). Four other Bears who are back on the roster hit over .200 last season.
IN THE CIRCLE
The pitching staff will once again be led by senior Alexis Guevara. Guevara led Brown with 142.1 innings pitched and 98 strikeouts. She finished the year with a 2.46 ERA, throwing 18 complete games and one shutout.
Macy Borowski (4.05 ERA, 91.2 innings pitched) is the only other pitcher on the Bears roster with innings under her belt.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
As usual, Brown will spend the early part of the season on the road. The Bears will be on the road for the first 13 games of the season before hosting Stonehill for a midweek doubleheader on March 19. The Bears open Ivy League play at home against Dartmouth on March 22-23.
REACHING BASE
Jasmine Hsiao carries a nine-game streak of reaching base into the 2025 season. Hsiao had the longest streak of the season for the Bears last year at 16.
