Men's Hockey Forces Overtime but Bears Fall to #5 Quinnipiac
11/8/2025 10:44:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (1-3-0, 1-1-0 ECAC) stormed back with two goals in the third period to force overtime, but the fifth-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats (6-3-2, 1-1-0 ECAC) scored late in the extra frame to take a 4-3 win Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown picked up four out of a possible six ECAC league points in the opening conference weekend.
"Quinnipiac is an excellent hockey team; that's a team that could win the National Championship," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "That being said, I really liked how we responded in the third and found a way to tie it up.
"We can't wait, we started a little tentatively, we're learning and we're a young them. Quinnipiac is a team with guys who have played in the American Hockey League on their team. They have a little bit more experience than we do.
"We cannot take a too many men on the ice penalty in overtime. Four-on-three situations are hard, you don't see them a lot, and honestly, you have to win a faceoff in order to get the puck down and kill the clock, and we didn't.
"It's disappointing because our goal is to win every game. I'm proud of the effort in the third, but we need to put together a complete 60 minutes. We learned which guys want to play the right way – the guys who want to play hard, be in, grind, and be selfless. We got some of those answers tonight. We need to continue getting better; it's a long year. We'll take the positives, but we need to be a 60-minute team."
"We're going on the road next week, every game in this league is an absolute grind, every team is good. College hockey is interesting; anybody can beat anybody, but every team has some really good pieces."
Quinnipiac struck for the night's first goal 12:29 into the first period after a back-and-forth start to the period. Matthew Lansing finished a feed from Antonin Verreault at the net-front for his third goal of the season. Elliott Groenewold picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Tyler Shea (39 saves) was strong in the opening period and finished the frame with 10 saves.
Charlie Gollob had a great chance in the opening minutes of the second period off a pass from Tanner Hartman from the slot, but Quinnipiac goaltender Matej Marinov (19 saves) turned it aside.
Shea turned aside a Chris Pelosi breakaway chance six minutes into the second on Brown's first power play opportunity of the night.
Michael Salandra wired a shot past Marinov on the same power play 6:46 into the period for his first career goal against his former team. Salandra collected a pass from Ethan Mistry at the top of the slot, and his quick shot beat Marinov. Brian Nicholas picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The Bobcats responded less than three minutes later as Pelosi tallied his sixth goal of the season with assists coming from Aaron Schwartz and Andon Cerbone.
Mason Marcellus extended the Bobcat lead to two with a breakaway goal 14:47 into the second period. Jeremy Wilmer and Pelosi assisted on the goal.
Gollob brought the Bears within a goal 4:07 into the third period. The sophomore collected a pass from Ivan Zadvernyuk in the slot and wired a shot past Marinov for his first goal of the season. St. Louis added the secondary assist on the goal.
Zackary Tonelli tied the game 73 seconds later. The senior redirected a point shot from Mistry to beat Marinov for his first goal of the campaign. Ben Poitras picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The Bears pushed offensively and nearly broke through with five shots in quick succession 13 minutes into the period. Marinov turned aside all five shots faced, including a pair from Nicholas.
Matt Desiderio had a great chance 30 seconds into overtime off a pass from St. Louis, but Marinov made the save. Shea kept the overtime period going 2:51 into the extra period with a strong save on Verreault.
A Brown too many men minor with 57 seconds left in overtime gave the Bobcats a power play. Wilmer scored the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining.
