Women's Hockey Starts Season with 2-1 Win at No. 13 Boston University
10/17/2025 9:19:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON – Brown women's hockey kicked off its 2025-26 campaign with a 2-1 win over No. 13 Boston University in Boston on Friday night (Oct. 17).
Brown (1-0-0) picked up goals from both Olivia Fantino and Monique Lyons in the win. Rory Edwards earned her first win in net this season with 23 saves.
After a scoreless first period, Boston University (0-5-0) broke through early in the second as Luisa Welcke beat Edwards three minutes into the frame.
The Bears responded late in the period as Fantino tipped one past BU's goalie. Avery Lian earned her first-career assist as she sent the puck in front to be deflected. Shauna Vadeboncoeur was also credited an assist on the play.
Brown took advantage of a turnover deep in the Terriers zone as Sam Broz stole the puck in the corner, centered the pass to Lyons who Mari Pietersen to put the Bears up 2-1.
The Terriers would earn three power plays after Brown took the lead but the Bears killed all three penalties with BU managing just three shots during the man-advantages. Combined, the two teams went 0-for-8 on the power play with both teams going 0-for-4.
GAME NOTES
The Bears earned their first win over a ranked opponent on the road in their last five attempts. The Bears were 0-2-2 against ranked teams since beating No. 7 Clarkson in overtime on Jan. 18 last season.
Brown has now started the season with a win in each of the last three seasons. Brown has not lost a season opener under head coach Melanie Ruzzi, going 3-0-2 in her five seasons.
The Bears are used to starting the season at home, only playing seven road games to open the season in the last 18 years. Brown's lone road win during that time came in the 2007-08 season with a 1-0 win at Union. Brown was 0-6 in the other contests.
This was just Brown's ninth win in 61 games under Ruzzi when Brown's opponent scored the first goal of the game.
Brown broke a three-game losing streak to the Terriers with the victory. It was the first win at Boston for Brown since 1984.
UP NEXT
Brown will open up its home schedule as the Bears host Merrimack on Sunday (Oct. 19) at 3 p.m.
