
Women's Hockey Begins Season Friday at #13 Boston University, Hosts Merrimack on Sunday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey begins its season with two games over the weekend. The Bears will travel to #13 Boston University on Friday (Oct. 17) before the home opener against Merrimack on Sunday (Oct. 19).
Puck drop against Boston University is set for 6 p.m. and the game against Merrimack will begin at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+
Brown finished last season with an eighth-place finish in the ECAC, hosting an ECAC Tournament Opening Round Game for the second-straight year. Brown fell to Union in the matchup.
Brown finished last season with 14 wins, the most by a Brown team since 2005-06. It was also the last time Brown finished the year above .500. The eight ECAC wins Brown had were also the most since the 2005-06 season (10).
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
• Boston University enters the weekend with an 0-4-0 record, coming off back-to-back losses at No. 8 Colgate last weekend.
• The Terriers have played two home games this season, dropping both to No. 3 Minnesota.
• It has been a balanced offensive attack for BU this season with six different players finding the net.
• The Terriers are the most penalized team in the NCAA early this season, averaging 14.8 penalty minutes through four games.
INSIDE THE SERIES
• Brown is 7-10-2 all-time against Boston University and 6-4-0 in the last ten meetings with the Terriers.
• This will be the first meeting between Brown and Boston University since Nov. 27, 2018.
• Brown has not beaten Boston University since picking up a 3-1 win at home on Dec. 5, 2006.
• The Bears last win in Boston was back in 1984 when Brown won 12-0.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
• Merrimack is 2-3-1 on the year and is coming off a 3-1 win at Lindenwood last weekend.
• Merrimack has already played two ECAC teams this year, going 1-1 against Clarkson and going 0-1-1 at Union.
• The Warriors have been outshot by an average of 16 shots per game this season.
• Emma Pfeffer leads Merrimack with three goals on the year and Avery Anderson is tops with seven points.
INSIDE THE SERIES
• This will be the fifth-ever meeting between Brown and Merrimack.
• Merrimack owns a 4-0 advantage in the series with the last meeting being a 1-0 win for MC back in 2021 in Providence.
CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
• The Bears will have two players with the 'C' on their sweaters this season, as seniors Jade Iginla and India McDadi were both voted captains for the season
• Iginla, who served as a captain last season, finished last year with 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists)
• McDadi was an assistant captain a season ago and was third on the team in points (20) and second on the team in assists (14).
DONNING THE 'A'
• Two Bears will be serving as assistant captains this season with seniors Gali Levy and Ellie Gauvin being voted by their teammates.
RETURNING FIREPOWER
• Brown boasts and impressive group of returners as Brown returns 85% (63-74 goals) of its goal scoring from a season-ago.
• The top-five goal scorers from last year are back, led by Moniques Lyons (14), Margot Norehad (12), Ava DeCoste (11), India McDadi (6) and Jade Iginla (6).
• The Bears return seven of their eight double-digit points scorers from last season, including Lyons (24), DeCoste (21) and McDadi (20), who all reached the 20-point mark.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
• Brown found its starting goaltender last year in Rory Edwards, the junior returns having played in 25 of the 35 games Brown played last season.
• Edwards finsihed the year with a 12-8-2 record, including three shutouts. Edwards three shutouts last season are the most by a Bear since Katie Jamieson had three back in the 2009-10 season.
• Edwards has a 2.23 GAA and a .921 save percentage.
• The best stretch of Edwards career came from Jan. 17-Jan. 25 of last season when the Bears went 2-0-2 against St. Lawrence, Clarkson, Princeton and Quinnipiac. Edwards earned wins at both St. Lawrence and Clarkson with both games going into overtime. She followed that up with a tie at Princeton and a 45-save 0-0 tie at Quinnipiac to close the stretch.
• Edwards was twice named ECAC Goaltender of the Week last season.
WEEKLY HONORS
• Senior defensewoman Cameron Sikich was named ECAC Defender of the Week after her performance in two games against Franklin Pierce (Oct. 22).
• Sikich finished the two-game series with three goals and two assists.
• Senior defensewoman Cameron Sikich was named ECAC Defender of the Week for the second time this season after tallying three assists in the wins over Dartmouth and Harvard (Nov. 5).
• Rory Edwards was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week after collecting 80 saves in ties at Princeton and Quinnipiac. Edwards picked up her second-career shutout with a career-high 45 saves against Quinnipiac.
• Edwards was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Edwards allowed just one goal in games against Harvard and Dartmouth, collecting her third-career shutout against the Big Green.
STRONG START FOR THE BEARS
• Brown started 6-0-0 in a season for the first time since the 1992-93 season. That season the Bears won their first eight games of the season en route to a 15-8-1 mark.
SERIES WINS
• Brown won five series in ECAC play last season, sweeping Harvard and Dartmouth and winning series against Princeton, Quinnipiac and St. Lawrence 1-0-1.
• It is the first time since the 2003-04 season that Brown has gone unbeaten against five difference conference play teams in a season.
• Brown last won a series against:
Harvard (2023-24), Dartmouth (2023-24), Qunnipiac (2008-09), St. Lawrence (2002-03) and Princeton (2001-02)
NORTH COUNTRY SWEEP
• Brown swept its North Country trip for the first time in program history earning overtime wins against No. 8 St. Lawrence and No. 7 Clarkson.
• The win at St. Lawrence was the first time since 2005 and the win at Clarkson was the first win there since 2006.
