Men's Hockey Falls to Rensselaer in Conference Matchup
1/4/2025 8:03:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-6-2, 2-5-1 ECAC) dropped a 4-3 ECAC conference game to the Rensselaer Engineers (8-9-2, 3-5-0 ECAC) Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
"It was not a very good weekend overall," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought in spurts we played well but were very inconsistent all weekend. From player to player, from line to line, it's something we have to correct. We need consistency to how we play structurally and what we're trying to do on the ice.
"When we get away from it, we'll struggle. You need to get points at home. We'll have to find a way to be better Tuesday night against really talented Providence College team. And then we have to go on the road and find a way to take points off of two very good teams."
RPI took a 1-0 lead on its second power play of the opening period. Jake Gagnon tipped a point shot from Will Gilson to beat goaltender Lawton Zacher (24 saves).
The Engineers doubled the lead with 3:57 remaining in the frame as Jimmy Goffredo beat Zacher with a seeing eye shot through traffic.
Dean Bauchiero brought the Bears within a goal with 1:49 remaining in the first, collecting a net-front rebound off an initial shot from Brett Bliss and beating RPI goaltender Noah Giesbrecht (27 saves) for his first goal of the season. Thomas Manty picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Moments after a Rensselaer power play ended, the Bears tied the game at 2-2 halfway through the second period as Brian Nicholas tallied his fifth goal of the season.
Tyler Kopff carried the puck into the zone and hit Tony Andreozzi with a pass on the rush. Andreozzi's shot rebounded off Giesbrecht to Nicholas in the slot, who found the back of the net.
Jakob Lee made it 3-2 RPI early in the third period, finishing a feed from Jagger Tapper in the slot for his seventh goal of the season.
The Bears pressed throughout the third looking to even the score once again, but Tapper found the empty net from the Engineer zone to push the score to 4-2.
With 41 seconds remaining, Max Scott rifled a shot through Giesbrecht to bring the Bears back within one. On the final faceoff of the night with three seconds remaining, Scott won the puck back to Alex Pineau but his last-second shot went just wide.
