Men's Hockey Drops Hard-Fought Game to Union

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-5-2, 2-4-1 ECAC) dropped a hard-fought ECAC conference game to the Union Garnet Chargers (10-7-1, 4-3-0 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"It wasn't our night, I thought we started off fine but then we had a couple injuries to key players up front and I didn't think we responded well to that adversity," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We need to find a way to be able to respond positively.
"I did think in the third the guys came out in the third with some intensity and desire but that needs to start from the get-go. Union's a very good team and that's a huge game. For us, that's a game you want to get some points, especially at home. We need to find a way to be better from the start tomorrow. The guys will be prepared, and we'll find a way to put our best effort forward for a full 60 minutes tomorrow."
Alex Pineau gave the Bears a 1-0 lead just 3:32 into the opening period. The sophomore collected a blue line pass from Ethan Mistry and wired a shot through traffic to beat Union goaltender Kyle Chauvette (22 saves). Ryan St. Louis added the secondary assist on the goal.
Less than 30 seconds later, the Garnet Chargers tied the game as Lucas Buzziol finished a feed from Riley Brueck on the rush to beat Lawton Zacher (29 saves).
The Garnet Chargers took a 2-1 lead 11:06 into the second period as John Prokop struck on the power play with assists going to Caden Villegas and Colby MacArthur.
Zacher made the save of the night on Ben Muthersbaugh with four minutes remaining in the third period to keep the Bears within a goal.
The Bears pulled Zacher for the extra attacker with two minutes remaining, but were unable to find the equalizer. Brandon Buhr tallied an empty-net goal with 43 seconds remaining to seal the Union win.
