5/3/2024 9:00:00 PM | Softball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball got big performances at the plate and in the circle as the Bears beat Penn 10-2 in five innings in the first game of a three-game series.
Brown had three hitters – Laurel Moody, Moe Kastens and Leah Carey – finish the game with three hits. It was the first time since Brown's game at Dartmouth on April 7 that Brown had three players with three hits in a game. Moody finished the game with a team-high four RBI.
Alexis Guevara picked up the win for Brown throwing a complete game. Guevara struck out five batters and allowed four hits while not giving up an earned run.
The Bears got started quickly, putting runners on the corner with one out. Dara English singled to left to bring home Moody. After Alyssa Villarde stole second, running for English, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray brought home Jasmine Hsiao with a sac fly. Two batters later, Carey singled to score Villarde and the Bears led 3-0 after one inning.
Brown continued to pour it on in the third, taking advantage of another Penn error. With one out, the Bears had runners on the corners again and Kastens singled to right to score the first run. Carey and Jayme Gross each followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 5-0. Moody delivered the biggest blow of the game hitting a ball that landed on the right field foul line that cleared the bases and ended with Moody standing on third base with the Bears up 8-0.
Guevara faced the minimum through the first three innings and allowed Penn's first hit to lead off the fourth but the Bears retired the next three batters to keep the lead at eight.
Penn began the fifth inning reaching base on an error by Brown. After a pop out, a single put runners at first and second. Guevara picked up a strikeout but two-straight singles put two runs on the board for the Quakers.
Kastens got the Bears going in the fifth with a double to the wall in center and Maya Choksi entered the game as a pinch runner. Carey singled, moved Choksi to third and stole second in the next at bat. Two batters later, Vanessa Alexander was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Moody singled to left to score Choksi and make Brown's lead seven. Carey was thrown out at home on a ground ball for the second out of the inning. Hsiao stepped to the plate to with a chance to end the game and saw four-straight balls for the walk-off walk.
