Softball Doomed by Home Runs in Losses to Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (6-15, 1-4 Ivy) dropped both games of its doubleheader against Harvard (12-11, 3-4 Ivy) to start its three-game series against the Crimson on Saturday.
The Bears were done in by the long ball as Harvard finished the day with six solo home runs, including three by Madi Mays.
Brianna Rodriguez, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Moe Kastens all had three hits on the day.
GAME 1: HARVARD 3, BROWN 0
Brown was done in by three solo home runs in the first game of the day. The Bears managed just five hits in the game, two coming from Laurel Moody.
The Bears picked up three singles in the second, coming from Brianna Rodriguez, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Moe Kastes but during the inning, Rodriguez was called out for leaving early and Brown stranded two runners.
Brown was unable to get another runner past first the rest of the game.
Harvard took the lead in the fourth with a solo home run by Madi Mays. Mays hit her second home run of the game off Brown starter Alexis Guevara in the sixth as Harvard led off the sixth with back-to-back solo shots.
GAME 2: HARVARD 5, BROWN 3
Brown collected 10 hits with Rodriguez, Zytkewicz Ray and Kastens all picking up two hits. Lily Berlinger, Jasmine Hsiao, Vanessa Alexander and Jayme Gross each finished with a hit.
Gross brought home Rodriguez to get the scoring started for Brown in the bottom of the second but the Crimson responded with a run in the top of the third as the first three batters reached base.
Brown starter Macy Borowski got out of the inning, avoiding any more damage.
The Bears jumped back on top in the fourth as Zytkewicz Ray doubled to right center to score Rodriguez.
The lead was short lived as Harvard hit two solo home runs. A single in the top of the sixth brought home another run for the Crimson, who took a 4-2 lead.
Kastens brought home Liv Kam in the bottom of the sixth but another solo shot in the top of the seventh made the score. 5-3.
UP NEXT
Brown and Harvard will close out the series at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
