Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Davidson to Earn Series Win
3/10/2024 6:50:00 PM | Baseball
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Brown baseball team split a doubleheader at Davidson on Sunday afternoon to earn their first series win of the season, taking two out of three from the Wildcats on the weekend. Brown took game one 6-4 in seven innings, before falling 12-5 in the nightcap.
Senior third baseman Charles Crawford powered the Bears out of the nine-spot in the batting order throughout the day, going 3-for-5 with six RBIs between the two games, including a pair of home runs in game one. Infielders Gunner Boree and Reece Rappoli each went 3-for-7 with two walks in the two games, and sophomore shortstop DJ Dillehay went 3-for-9 on the day with a three-run homer in game two.
GAME ONE
After a scoreless first two innings, the Bears struck first behind Crawford's first home run of the season. Moments later, first-year Brady Dever brought home Mika Petersen to add to the Brown lead, 2-0.
Davidson took the lead in the bottom frame with three runs, sandwiched between what appeared to be a bobbled ground ball. Boree threw out a speedy Wildcat on a chopper up the middle and Mark Henshon stretched out while leaving his toe on the bag for the final out of the third.
Brown answered right back in the fourth when the long ball paid off again as Crawford's three-run shot brought home Conor Cooke and Nathan Brasher to regain the lead for the Bears, 5-3.
Davidson chipped away in the bottom of the fourth with a run, but Brown was able to preserve the one-run lead headed to the fifth as Paxton Meyers punched out his seventh Wildcat to limit the damage.
Brown cushioned the lead with a run in the sixth on Henshon's sacrifice fly and Ryan Oshinskie shut the door with a two-inning save, inducing a double play to clinch the 6-4 win for Brown.
Meyers improved to 2-0 on the year after striking out eight in 5.0 innings, and Oshinskie collected his first collegiate save. Cooper Cavanaugh was charged with the loss and fell to 0-2 in 2024.
Crawford finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, Nathan Brasher added two runs as eight Bears registered base hits in game one.
GAME TWO
Davidson struck early and often in game two, scoring all 12 of their runs in the second through fourth innings. The Wildcats put three runs on the board in the second via four hits, three of which came in consecutive at bats after there were two outs. They piled on five more runs on four hits and two homers in the third, with the big blow coming in the form of a three-run homer with one out. Four more scored in the fourth with the help of a balk and two-run homer.
Brown got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Crawford continued his big day with a two-out, two-run single to center field to plate two unearned runs. The Bears put three more runs on the board in the sixth inning courtesy of a three-run homer by Dillehay, who jumped on the first pitch with two outs.
