Men's Hockey Falls at Yale on Friday Night

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale Bulldogs (10-13-1, 7-9-1 ECAC) held on for a 3-1 home win over the beleaguered Brown Bears (8-13-1, 6-9-1 ECAC) in a conference matchup Friday night at Ingalls Rink.
"The margin between winning and losing is very small," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We had plenty of chances to score as we generated enough offensive opportunities throughout the game. We are unbelievably banged up right now and missing some key offensive players which has forced a lot of line shuffling and role changes with those that are healthy. I am hopeful we get some of the injured back soon."
Yale jumped to an early lead with a shorthanded goal 8:33 into the opening frame. Reilly Connors found the puck after the initial shot went wide to beat Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (27 saves).
Zacher kept the Bears within a goal two minutes into the middle frame, robbing Will Dineen of a goal with a glove save.
Tyler Kopff evened the score at 1-1 early in the second after a great individual effort from Ryan Bottrill. The sophomore forced a Yale turnover in the offensive zone and found Kopff at the top of the right circle for the one-timer to beat goaltender Jack Stark (19 saves).
Niklas Allain drove Zacher out of the net two minutes later to allow David Chen to score to give Yale a 2-1 lead. A Brown challenge was unsuccessful despite the contact in the crease to allow the goal.
Ryan Shostak hit Mike Cataldo with a pass to spring the freshman alone in the slot with Stark, but the Yale goaltender came up with the save to keep the Bulldogs ahead 8:50 into the third period.
Zackary Tonelli had a great chance from the slot 13 minutes into the final period but Stark stood tall for the save.
A penalty against the Bears with 2:27 remaining in the third sunk the comeback effort and Dineen added an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 win.
GAME NOTES
Brown continues the ECAC slate next weekend with a trip to the Empire State to take on the #12/13 Cornell Big Red (14-4-4, 9-4-2 ECAC) on Friday and the Colgate Raiders (11-13-3, 8-6-1 ECAC) on Saturday.
Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and on Stretch Internet internationally.
