Men's Hockey Settles for Saturday Night Tie with Union
2/3/2024 10:46:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A depleted Brown Bears squad (8-12-2, 6-8-1 ECAC) and the Union Garnet Chargers (12-12-2 6-6-2 ECAC) combined for five goals in the third period in a 4-4 tie Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The visitors won the shootout for the extra ECAC point.
"I think they earned it with those opportunities in the third," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. We need to find a way to not panic, to block a few pucks and not have them overwhelm us at the net-front.
"We're dealing with a lot of injuries to guys that play a lot of minutes for us so we were a little short and then Max Scott went down and he's been unbelievable for us. That being said, we need guys to step up and play the right way. We're very young, there are going to be inconsistencies in what we do. We're going to have to play better than we did tonight next weekend. Hopefully we'll get a few guys back."
Nick Traggio gave the Bears a 1-0 lead 14:24 into the first period, deflecting a rebound off the initial shot from Ryan Bottrill to beat Union goaltender Kyle Chauvette (21 saves). Zackary Tonelli added the secondary assist on the goal.
Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (42 saves) kept the Bears ahead with a highlight reel glove save against Union forward Colby MacArthur five minutes into the second period.
The Bears would double the lead 12:12 into the second as Mike Cataldo re-directed a point shot from Ethan Mistry on the power play for his second goal of the season. Tyler Kopff added the secondary assist on the special teams goal.
Union got on the board with 2:03 remaining in the second as Caden Villegas beat Zacher. Ville Immonen and Joseph Messina picked up the assists on the goal.
Bottrill struck just 34 seconds into the third period to give the Bears a 3-1 lead, finishing off an Alex Pineau rebound for his third goal of the season. Kopff picked up his second assist of the night on the goal.
Union cut into the lead 10:18 into the third with Nate Hanley picking up the goal. Play initially continued, but a video review determined the puck crossed the goal line. Immonen and John Prokop picked up the assists.
Just over three minutes later, Kopff wired a shot past Chauvette for his fourth goal of the season with Ryan St. Louis and Bottrill recording assists.
Chauvette left the net for the extra attacker with five minutes remaining and Ben Tupker cut the lead to one with 4:50 remaining on a re-directed shot.
Union's Brandon Buhr tied the game with 58 seconds remaining off assists from Tyler Watkins and Prokop to force overtime.
Neither team found the overtime winner to end the game in a tie and head to Brown's first conference shootout of the season.
Carter Korpi and Hanley found the back of the net in the shootout to give the Garnet Chargers the extra point.
