Jess Ciarrocchi Nets Overtime Winner to Lift Women's Hockey to Playoff Victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Â Junior Jess Ciarrocchi netted the game winning goal 8:54 into overtime to lift the eighth-seeded Brown women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over ninth-seeded RPI in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament.
Senior Maya Mangiafico and sophomore Ellie Gauvin each picked up assists on the goal. The Bears improve to 12-15-3 on the season, while the Engineers see their year come to an end with a record of 13-18-4.
"We knew that RPI is a senior and graduate student led team with physicality, so we knew that we had to play gritty and be willing to put pucks deep, put pucks on net from different angles, work on our retrievals, feed the defense, and then put pucks back on net, that was how this game was going to go," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We also knew defensively that we needed to shut it down enough to be in the back check and pick up their players. RPI transitioned really well and quick, they leave the zone really quick, so we knew that we had to lock down in terms of our details and game plan."
It was battle for the full 60 minutes. Senior Kaley Doyle notched 10 saves in the first as that was the only period that RPI outshot the Bears.
Brown controlled the possession for the majority of the second and third periods, testing RPI graduate student goaltender Amanda Rampado with 14 shots on goal in the final 40 minutes.
RPI had the first two shots of overtime, while the second on goal for the Bears was the one that counted. Gauvin sent a puck from deep into a scrum in front of the net that was batted around and eventually put into the net by Ciarrocchi to ignite the celebration at Meehan.
Brown travels to Colgate for the ECAC quarterfinal round. The three-game series takes place on March 1-3. Friday's game is at 3 p.m. and both Saturday and Sunday are 2 p.m. starts.
