HAMILTON, N.Y. -Â The eighth-seeded Brown women's hockey dropped game one of the ECAC quarterfinal round at No. 4 and top-seeded Colgate, 5-1, on Friday in Hamilton.
Freshman Ava DeCoste scored the lone goal for the Bears with an assist to sophomore Jade Iginla. Senior Kaley Doyle finished with 35 saves in the game.
The Bears fall to 12-16-3 overall, while the Raiders improve to 28-6-1.
"We played really well in certain pockets of the game," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We created some scoring chances and got into the offensive zone and got to our forecheck. Defensively we knew how they played and that they were going to get rolling in the offensive zone. We held them off for a while and they set some picks and found people open. That happened too many times, so we need to be ready to go tomorrow."
Brown battled in the first, as Doyle turned away 13 shots. Colgate would finally find the back of the net with 18 seconds remaining in the period on a goal by fifth-year Kaitlyn O'Donohue from freshman Avery Pickering and fifth-year Allyson Simpson to take a 1-0 lead heading to the second.
The Raiders tallied a pair of quick goals midway through the second. Senior Dara Greig made it 2-0 at the 8:31 mark with assists from sophomore Sydney Morrow and fifth-year Danielle Serdachny. Colgate extended its advantage to 3-0 at 5:47 when Serdachny scored from Greig and sophomore Sarah Stewart.
Brown got on the board with 1:38 left in the second when Iginla won a faceoff and the puck found DeCoste, who fired it home to make it a 3-1 Colgate lead heading to the third.
Serdachny scored again just over three minutes into the third from Morrow and fifth-year Sydney Bard. Senior Kas Betinol then scored an empty netter from freshman Emma Pais and Bard to finish things off.
Brown and Colgate play game two of the ECAC quarterfinal round at Class of 1965 Arena at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
