First Period Offense Lifts #7 Quinnipiac Over Men's Hockey
2/23/2024 10:23:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The seventh-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats (23-7-2, 16-3-1) scored four unanswered goals in the first period and went on to take a 5-2 win over the Brown Bears (8-16-2, 6-12-1 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
With the win, the Bobcats captured the Cleary Cup as the ECAC's regular season champions.
We lost to an unbelievably good hockey team," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We had a lull and it cost us; we lost the game in a six-minute span in the first period. We played very well the rest of the game. We're a young team trying to learn and fortunately it seemed that the learning happened in that stretch in the first.
"From our perspective, we need to continue to get better. We're playing short-handed and missing a bunch of guys that are good players for us, specifically centers. We have guys playing out of position and guys that are playing up in roles that they're not used to. Some guys handled it well tonight and others didn't. The rest of the games we play are playoff games. We want to move up in the standings and give ourselves a chance at home ice, but we have no margin for error anymore."
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Bobcats struck for four goals in the final 6:17 of the frame with four different players finding the back of the net.
Tyler Shea (16 saves) replaced Lawton Zacher (15 saves) to start the second period, which went scoreless with Brown holding a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
Zach Tupker extended Quinnipiac's lead 9:15 into the third period with his fifth goal of the season.
With 7:37 remaining in the third, Ryan St. Louis finished a centering pass from Tyler Kopff for his 11th goal of the season. Brendan Clark picked up the secondary assist on the sophomore's goal.
Shea turned aside a penalty shot effort from Christophe Tellier with 3::45 remaining in the third after stopping Tellier's initial breakaway chance.
Kopff tallied his sixth goal of the season with an unassisted effort with 2:36 remaining.
