Baseball Drops Season Opener at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Brown baseball team dropped its season opener at UT Martin by a score of 12-2 in seven innings on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore shortstop DJ Dillehay went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore outfielder Mika Petersen was 1-for-3 with a run scored to extend his on-base streak to 28 games. Junior outfielder Nathan Brasher added a pair of hits and senior first baseman Reece Rappoli had a hit, walk and RBI. Eight of UT Martin's runs scored with two outs.
After a scoreless first inning, the Skyhawks scored at least two runs in each inning for the rest of the game. UT Martin struck for three runs in the second inning, two of which were unearned. After a leadoff single and a one out walk, an RBI single plated the first run, followed by an unearned run on a throwing error and a double steal of second and home.
UT Martin tacked on two more runs in the third on three hits, including two RBI singles with two outs.
The Bears came back with two of their own in the fourth, starting with a leadoff double through the right side by Petersen. He scored two batters later on an RBI single up the middle by Dillehay, who then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Rappoli then drove home Dillehay with a single to center field to bring the Bears within three.
UT Martin got both runs right back in the bottom of the fourth, both coming with two outs. Following an RBI single with two outs, the Skyhawks used another double steal attempt to plate their seventh run.
The Skyhawks scored twice more in the fifth on three hits, with all the damage coming after two outs, then piled on three more runs on three hits and a walk in the sixth.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Eastern/1 p.m. Central for game two of the series. No broadcast will be available. Live stats can be found here.
