Baseball Drops Saturday Game at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – Three unearned runs doomed the Brown baseball team on Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 loss at UT Martin in the second game of a three-game season-opening series for the Bears.
Senior Paxton Meyers got the start on the mound for Brown and tossed 6.0 solid innings allowing two runs (both unearned) on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Freshman Miles Newsome picked up two hits, a run, and a steal in his collegiate debut. Sophomore DJ Dillehay gave the Bears the lead in the sixth inning with a solo homer and sophomore Mark Henshon also went 1-for-3.
UT Martin jumped on the board in the second inning, scoring on a two-out infield error that could have ended the frame despite a single and walk that started the inning.
Brown tied things up in the fifth inning with some two-out magic of their own. Newsome and Henshon tallied back-to-back singles before Newsome crossed the plate on an error.
The Bears took their first lead of the season in the sixth on a leadoff home run by Dillehay, who roped one down the left field line for the 2-1 lead.
The Skyhawks got the run back against the Brown bullpen in the seventh inning. After a dropped foul popup led to a leadoff double, an RBI single four pitches later knotted the game 2-2. UTM then took the lead with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth following a walk, bunt and a pair of errors.
The two teams will meet for the final time on Sunday with a first pitch scheduled for noon Eastern Time.
