Women's Tennis Concludes Midwest Trip at Northwestern
2/18/2024 6:15:00 PM | Women's Tennis
EVANSTON, Ill. -Â Brown women's tennis wrapped up its midwest trip with a 5-2 loss at Northwestern Sunday afternoon.
After falling in doubles for the first time this season, the Bears battled their way through singles. Sophomore Phoebe Peus won at first singles (7-6 (7-3), 6-1) and freshman Dani Ben-Abraham took fifth singles (6-2, 6-4).
Despite the singles losses, Brown was resilient as junior Gabby Soliman fell in a third-set tiebreaker at third singles, and senior Ali Benedetto lost in three sets at second singles.
"We started the match uncharacteristically slow in doubles and lost the doubles point very quickly. However, we bounced back in singles, competing the entire match on all singles courts," said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Even though our team ended up losing the match, I felt it was the best singles performance of the season across all courts. We challenged our opponents in every point, matched their intensity and stayed in points as long as necessary to put ourselves in a position to be successful. Dani played aggressively and smart at line five and even when her opponent started coming back in the second set, she dug deep, stayed tough in pressure moments and won the match in two competitive sets."
"Phoebe completely outcompeted her opponent in the first set, winning it in a tiebreaker and then running away with the second set attacking the net relentlessly and moving her opponent all around the court," said Schmidhauser. "Gabby competed fiercely in her match against an extremely tricky and unorthodox opponent, but kept her cool and was very close to pulling the match out. Ali had chances in the third set she couldn't capitalize on, but I was pleased with her improved game style clarity and overall consistency. I am very encouraged by our team's competitiveness in today's match and I sincerely hope today's match is just the beginning for our team to realize their potential. There are no shortcuts on the road to becoming a championship team and our players came a step closer today to understanding what it takes to get there."
