Men's Hockey Takes 5-2 Win Over Air Force to Close Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-3-2, 2-3-1 ECAC) struck for five goals to close out the weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Air Force Falcons (8-9-1, 5-3-0 AHA) on the second annual Teddy Bear Toss game Saturday at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown extends its unbeaten streak to five games and are 3-0-2 over the stretch.
"That was a good win, we got better as the game went on, which is a good trait to have," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we were really good in the third period; it was our best period of the weekend. We found a way to pull away with a great power play goal.
"I thought we got contributions from a lot of guys. In college hockey, there are a lot of teams that are very similar in talent and to win games you have to out-work and out-compete teams. I thought in the second and through the third we did a lot of good things.
"It's still early, but we're definitely getting better and growing. We're showing some maturity and I'm really proud of the steps the guys took today to win a game and win a third period."
Alex Pineau tallied his second goal of the season just 32 seconds into the opening period, wiring a shot over Guy Blessing (26 saves) off a rush. Brian Nicholas and Tyler Kopff assisted on the goal.
Less than two minutes later, Chris Hedden tied the game on the power play, finishing a Nolan Cunningham feed through traffic to beat Lawton Zacher (30 saves). Clayton Cosentino picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Pineau struck for his second of the period with 1:57 remaining, burying a beautiful feed from Brendan Clark on a delayed Air Force penalty.
Brendan Gibbons evened the score at 2-2 with 12:18 remaining in the second period with a wrist shot from the top of the circle.
Thirty seconds later, Clark responded with his first goal of the season. The senior cleaned up a rebound off Charlie Gollob's initial shot on Blessing. A review confirmed the goal.
Max Scott gave Brown a two-goal lead with 8:04 remaining in the third period, finishing a back-door feed from Nicholas on the power play with Kopff adding the secondary assist.
With the Falcon net empty for the extra attacker, Scott added his second of the game with 47 seconds remaining to push the final to 5-2. Pineau and Clark picked up the assists on the goal.
