Men's Hockey Outlasts Princeton for Shootout Win
11/16/2024 10:42:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (0-3-1, 0-3-1 ECAC) controlled the final two periods of play en route to a 1-1 tie against the Princeton Tigers (1-2-1, 1-2-1 ECAC) Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
The Bears captured the shootout win for the extra league point in the standings.
"It was a good effort and I thought the guys responded and played really hard," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "That's the way we have to play; we have to play physical, fast-paced, gritty hockey. That's how we're going to have success. The good thing is we've done it twice on Saturdays, we didn't get the win last week at Cornell but we found a way to get an extra point tonight.
"We did a lot of good things, we did enough to win the game in regulation. That was the best second period we've played in a long, long time. And Princeton is a good hockey team, they're well-coached, that was a big-time battle with a lot of physicality.
"It was a fun game to coach, I'm sure it was a fun game to play in, and I'm sure that it was a great game to watch for the people here. The good thing is we're growing, we're young but we're growing. We're going to be a team to be reckoned with. I don't care where we are in the standings at this point, I care where we are at the end of the year."
The Tigers struck first with 5:32 remaining in the opening period as David Ma's shot through traffic beat Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (26 saves) on Princeton's first power play of the game. Nick Marciano and Jaxson Ezman picked up the assists on Ma's first goal of the season.
Max Scott tied the game 2:44 into the second period just seconds into the start of 4-on-4 play. Tyler Kopff forced a Princeton turnover deep in the Tiger zone and Scott wired a shot from the left dot to beat goaltender Ethan Pearson (29 saves).
Zacher made a strong save on Princeton's Caron Buydens late in the second period to keep the game even at 1-1.
The Bears and Tigers were scoreless in the third period to send the game to overtime.
Brian Nicholas had a pair of scoring chances during the 3-on-3 overtime but Pearson stood tall to force the shootout.
Zacher turned aside both Princeton shootout attempts from Ian Devlin and Brendan Gorman while Kopff and Scott both scored against Pearson to secure the extra point.
