Gollob's Last Second Goal Stuns #19 Clarkson
11/22/2024 10:21:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
POTSDAM, N.Y. – Charlie Gollob's first career goal with 0.5 remaining on the clock stunned the 19th-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights (8-4-1, 2-1-0 ECAC) and lifted the Brown Bears (1-3-1, 1-3-1 ECAC) to a 1-0 win Friday night at Cheel Arena.
It marked goaltender Lawton Zacher's first career shutout and the first time in program history Brown has won consecutive games on the road against Clarkson.
"It was a great win, it's hard to win up here," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They have a good hockey team, they're a top-20 team in the country for a reason. I thought we found a way to win and at the end of the day you're judged on wins.
"We found a way to get it done, I thought Zacher played great and gave us a chance in that game. Not every game you're going to have it going 100%, but to be able to find a way to win in those games, those are mature teams that end up at the top of the standings at the end of the year. Those are teams that win Championships.
"I'm proud of the guys, we have another big one tomorrow, it's a hard place to play and we'll go in with a goal to sweep the North Country."
Brown and Clarkson skated to a scoreless first period with chances at both sides of the ice. Zacher (29 saves) tallied six saves in the opening frame while Clarkson's Ethan Langenegger (15 saves) recorded four stops.
Zacher kicked aside all 11 shots faced in a scoreless second period, including two on Clarkson's first power play chance of the night early in the period.
Tyler Kopff had Brown's best chance of the period in the final seconds, but Langenegger turned the shot aside.
Both teams came up empty on a power play chance early in the third period as the clock ticked down.
Following a Clarkson icing with 7.5 seconds remaining, Brian Nicholas won the faceoff back to Ethan Mistry, who fired a puck on net. Gollob found the loose puck and buried his first career goal with 0.5 seconds remaining for the game-winner.
The Golden Knights challenged the goal twice, once for goalie interference and again for a high-sticking, but both challenges were unsuccessful.
