Men's Hockey Drops League Game at Rensselaer
1/6/2024 10:02:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (5-10-1, 3-6-0 ECAC) were unable to tie the game in the final minutes and fell in conference play to the Rensselaer Engineers (6-12-1, 3-5-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Houston Field House.
"We played a very good game; it's hard to win on the road," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We had 22 shots in the third and had good offensive looks all night. We need to finish better but I'll take the positives out of this trip – we went 1-1 on the road and out-shot and out-chanced both teams by large margins.
"We are very close and getting better every time we step on the ice."
The Bears and Engineers went scoreless in a back-and-forth opening period. Goaltender Lawton Zacher (24 saves) turned aside all nine shots faced, including three in the final minute of the frame during a Rensselaer power play.
Tyler Hotson opened the scoring 16:36 into the middle period after finding the rebound in a net-front scramble. John Evans and Austin Heidemann assisted on the night's first goal.
After a Brown flurry early in the third, Evans broke behind the defense and drew a penalty shot, where he scored to double the Engineer lead 4:37 into the period.
Nick Traggio cut into RPI's lead halfway through the third with a seeing-eye shot from the blue point to beat goaltender Jack Watson (37 saves). Ryan St. Louis and Tony Andreozzi picked up the assists on the sophomore's second goal of the season.
Brown pressed offensively in the final minutes and pulled Zacher for the extra attacker, but Watson turned aside five shots in the final two minutes to give the Engineers the win.
