Men's Hockey Travels to Union, RPI in ECAC Weekend

PROVIDENCE R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-9-1, 2-5-0 ECAC) hit the road to kick off 2024 to take on the Union Garnet Chargers (8-9-0, 3-3-0 ECAC) on Friday night before closing the weekend against the Rensselaer Engineers (5-11-1, 2-4-0 ECAC).
Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and on Stretch Internet internationally.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Brown enters the weekend with a 4-9-1 overall record and 2-5-0 ECAC mark. Brown closed non-conference play last weekend at home, falling to Merrimack and tenth-ranked Providence.
- Freshman Max Scott leads the Bears with 10 assists and 14 points through 14 games. His 1.00 points per game and 0.71 assists per game both rank seventh in the ECAC
- Sophomore Ryan St. Louis leads the team with nine goals and ranks second with 12 points. He ranks fourth in the conference with nine goals.
- Goaltender Lawton Zacher holds a 2.87 goals against average and .907 save percentage in 10 starts. He recorded a season-high 40 saves last weekend against Providence.
- Union enters the weekend with an 8-9-0 overall record and 3-3-0 ECAC mark. The Garnet Chargers and Bears are even in the standings with nine points.
- Union returned to action last weekend with a 4-3 overtime loss at Bentley (12/30).
- Union's offense averages 3.4 goals per game to rank third in the conference and 16th nationally. The power play clicks at 20.4% (14-68) to rank fourth in the ECAC and 22nd in the NCAA.
- Chaz Smedsrud leads Union with seven goals while defenseman John Prokop leads the team with 16 assists and 20 points.
- Union allows 3.4 goals per game to rank eighth in the conference and 52nd nationally. Union's penalty kill leads the nation at 92.8% (64-69).
- Between the pipes, Kyle Chauvette has made 16 starts and holds a .893 save percentage and 3.25 goals against average.
- Friday marks the 66th meeting between Brown and Union dating back to 1989.The Bears hold a 27-24-14 overall record and 13-13-5 road record.
- Rensselaer enters the weekend with a 5-11-1 overall record and 2-4-0 conference mark.
- RPI returned to action last weekend with a weekend sweep over Canisius.
- Offensively, Rensselaer ranks seventh in the conference with 2.8 goals per game. The power play ranks seventh at 15.8% (9-57).
- Three players - Austin Heidemann, Jake Gagnon, and Tyler Hotson - lead the team with six goals apiece. Heidemann's 12 points are tied with Ryan Brushett and Sutter Muzzatti.
- Rensselaer's defense ranks at the bottom of the ECAC and 62nd nationally with 4.4 goals against per game. The penalty kill clicks at 66.7% (53-80) to rank last in the NCAA.
- Three goaltenders have made at least four starts this season. Carson Cherepak leads in minutes (441:49) and holds a 4.21 goals against average and .881 save percentage.
- Saturday marks the 109th meeting between Brown and RPI dating back to 1951. Rensselaer holds a 65-35-8 all-time series record but the Bears have won seven of the last 10.
- Just eight points separate second and last place in the current ECAC standings.
- Quinnipiac is pacing the league with 22 points in eight games, but following the Bobcats, Princeton has 14 points in second, just eight points ahead of Rensselaer and Yale (6 points).
- Brown is tied for seventh alongside St. Lawrence and Union.
