PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's basketball team held off Dartmouth down the stretch in a 35-31 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Sophomore Grace Arnolie pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds to go with seven points. Senior Kyla Jones added seven point and 10 rebounds, and sophomore Ada Anamekwe finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Bears outrebounded Dartmouth 57-43, including 19-10 on the offensive glass. The 31 points allowed by the Bears is the fewest allowed since surrendering 28 to Mount Ida on November 19, 2015.
The Bears doubled up Dartmouth in each quarter of the opening half, leading 10-5 after one and 18-9 at halftime. Brown closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run with Isabella Mauricio connecting on a pair of three-pointers and held the Big Green scoreless over the final 7:02 of the frame.
Dartmouth broke a 0-for-14 stretch with a bucket at 6:47 of the second quarter, their first points in 10:15 to make it 14-7. Anamekwe answered with consecutive layups to get the lead to 11 at the media timeout with 4:18 left until halftime.
Overall, Brown was held scoreless over the final 5:36 of the half and shot 8-for-34 through the opening 20 minutes, while holding the Big Green to just 4-of-28 from the field and 1-of-7 from three-point range.
After Brown took a game-high 13-point lead, Dartmouth used an 8-0 run to pull within 24-19, forcing a Brown timeout with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter.
With the score 27-21 entering the fourth, Olivia Young had a layup in transition from Arnolie, then Jones hit a pair from the line to get the lead back to eight in the first two minutes.
A scoring drought of 4:20 allowed Dartmouth to pull within three with five minutes to go. Anamekwe broke the stretch with a free throw with 2:50 to go, but a Dartmouth bucket with just over a minute to go cut it to 33-31. Brown's defense stepped up and forced a turnover in the final minute, and Arnolie hit two free throws with nine seconds left to help put the game away.
The Bears will return to action next weekend on Friday, February 2 with a trip to The Palestra to face Penn. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+. Brown will face Princeton on Saturday, February 3 at 5 p.m. in New Jersey.
