Men's Hockey Caps Weekend Sweep with 2-1 Win Over Dartmouth
1/13/2024 10:08:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown Bears (7-10-1, 5-6-0 ECAC) beat the Dartmouth Big Green (4-6-6, 2-3-4 ECAC) in an ECAC and Ivy League contest Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium to cap the weekend sweep and vault to second place in the ECAC standings.
Â
"That was a great weekend for Brown Hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we had a slow start but Zacher stood tall and had a great game and gave us a chance to get our feet under us. We played much better from there on out and found a way to get that win.
Â
"That was a big weekend sweep. It's two big Ivy wins and more importantly gets us on a little bit of a roll. We've been playing good hockey and the results take care of themselves ad it's nice to get the wins. The guys have gone 3-1 in the last four league games and I believe it's moved us up significantly in the standings.
Â
"We need to have a good week of preparation to go to the North Country which is always hard. I couldn't be prouder of the guys, they're playing the game the right way, the Brown way, and they're playing together."
Â
The first period remained scoreless for both the Bears and Big Green. The Bears had a total of five shots on goal while the Big Green had 12. Goaltender Lawton Zacher (36 saves) turned away all 12 shots that he faced in the opening period.
Â
A power play goal from Alex Pineau, assisted by Ryan St. Louis and Max Scott, put Brown on the board at 17:28 of the second period.
Â
Zacher turned aside all 12 shots faced in the middle frame with two Big Green power play chances.
Â
After a scrum in front of the Dartmouth goal, Ryan Bottrill found the back of the net to give the Bears a 2-0 lead 8:37 into the third period. Matt Sutton and Brett Bliss were credited with the assists.
Â
Dartmouth responded shortly after with their only goal of the night from Eric Charpentier at 10:54 of the period.
Â
The Big Green pulled goaltender Cooper Black (28 saves) with three minutes remaining in regulation, but the Bears were able to hold them off and secure the win to complete the weekend sweep.
